Seriously, I'm shocked to see the swift hand of justice rain down some blows on these foes, so expeditiously. I'm happy to see these heffas get justice served, and I'm hoping if they're giving this much time to the women, they'll serve up the males the same way...a nice fat dish of justice...best served piping hot! I would've liked to see them serve more time, but I'm surprise they were given this much...smh

LOGAN, W.Va. — Two women accused of taking part in the torture of a young black woman received the maximum sentences possible Thursday, but the victim's mother said it wasn't enough.

Karen Burton, 46, and Frankie Brewster, 49, both pleaded guilty last month for their roles in the kidnapping and dayslong assault of Megan Williams last summer. They were among seven white defendants charged in the case.

Burton used racial slurs while she stabbed and assaulted Williams. Logan County Circuit Judge Roger Perry sentenced her to 10 years for violating Williams' civil rights and two sentences of two to 10 years for assault. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Brewster received a 10-to-25-year sentence for second-degree sexual assault. Williams had been forced to perform oral sex on her.

Williams and her parents wept as the sentences were read. Brewster will be eligible for parole in 10 years, and Burton must serve at least six and a half years, according to Department of Corrections officials.

"I just believe he (prosecutor Brian Abraham) shouldn't have plea bargained with any of them," Williams' mother, Carmen, said after the sentencings. "She (Megan Williams) wanted them to do life."

Megan Williams, wearing dark sunglasses and a large black coat, made no statement.

Malik Shabazz, a founder of Washington, D.C.-based Black Lawyers for Justice, also decried the sentences. He called for a special state prosecutor and renewed involvement by federal authorities.

"I don't understand what happened here in Logan County and why they don't take what happens to our people seriously," Shabazz said.

Authorities say Williams was held captive for several days last summer at Brewster's trailer in Big Creek. In addition to the beatings and assaults, authorities said Williams was forced to eat animal feces and was stabbed. The 21-year-old woman was rescued by sheriff's deputies on Sept. 8 after they received an anonymous tip.

Abraham has been called up to active military duty. Prosecutor Robert Ilderton, who has taken over the case, said the Williams family had "expressed their gratitude to Mr. Abraham, in the media and in conversation," when Burton and Brewster pleaded guilty.

Two other defendants already have pleaded guilty and been sentenced. Burton's daughter, Alisha, 23, and George Messer, 27, both pleaded guilty in February to kidnapping and assault and received 10-year sentences.

Felony charges including kidnapping and sexual assault are pending against Brewster's son, Bobby, 24, and Danny Combs, 21. A seventh defendant, Karen Burton's son, Linnie Burton Jr., 21, was indicted on a misdemeanor battery charge.

The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault, but Williams and her mother agreed to release her name. Carmen Williams has said she wanted people to know what her daughter had endured

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — One of several white people charged in the suspected kidnapping, torture and sexual assault of a black woman has been indicted on a hate crime count, and two others have entered guilty pleas in the case.

Six people arrested after Megan Williams was rescued in September had been charged with counts that carry maximum life sentences, but until Tuesday's indictments no one had been charged with a hate crime. The issue has been a sore point among many of Williams' supporters.

Karen Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, was indicted Tuesday on charges of committing a hate crime, kidnapping and malicious wounding. Three others were indicted on counts including kidnapping, sexual assault and conspiracy.

Prosecutors say Williams, 20, was held captive for days at a trailer in Big Creek, where she was forced to eat animal feces, sexually assaulted and stabbed. She was rescued Sept. 8 after an anonymous caller alerted Logan County sheriff's deputies.

Logan County prosecutor Brian Abraham said Burton stabbed Williams in the ankle while saying, "This is what we do to n------ down here."

Karen Burton was "a little surprised" by the hate crime charge but was relieved that an earlier sexual assault count was not included in the indictment, said her attorney, Betty Gregory.

"She didn't want her children to think anything like that about her," Gregory said.

While noting that Burton has two biracial grandchildren in North Carolina whom "she dearly loves," Gregory said part of Burton's defense will be that she "has a significant history of child abuse from her own childhood."

Two other defendants — Burton's daughter, 23-year-old Alisha Burton, and 27-year-old George A. Messer — each pleaded guilty Friday and have agreed to testify against the others.

Messer and Alisha Burton, both of Chapmanville, were each sentenced to concurrent prison terms of 10 years for kidnapping and two to 10 years for assault during the commission of a felony, Abraham said. Williams and her family were consulted before plea deals were offered, he said.

The state hate crime count against Karen Burton is the first one legal scholars can remember being prosecuted in West Virginia.

"This one particular charge in this one particular case is winnable, and you can send the message that this type of behavior is not going to be tolerated," said West Virginia University sociology professor Jim Nolan, who teaches a course on hate crimes.

The Rev. Al Sharpton and groups including Washington, D.C.-based Black Lawyers for Justice had pushed for hate-crime charges. Sharpton, who led a hate crimes rally in Charleston in December, said Wednesday that it was good one such charge was filed but added that there should have been more.

"They all engaged in hate crimes because they aided and abetted a hate crime," Sharpton said.

Abraham said other defendants used the same slur Karen Burton did, but the fact that Burton used it while stabbing Williams made her act more clearly a hate crime.

"The distinction was that we think that there was an affirmative statement as to Karen Burton's motivation when she allegedly said that to Megan Williams," Abraham said.

Abraham previously had refrained from filing hate-crime charges, saying they would be difficult because there was a pre-existing relationship. Williams filed domestic assault charges against one of the defendants, Bobby Brewster, in July.

Abraham also had noted that the 10-year maximum prison sentence for a hate crime conviction was low compared with the life term a kidnapping conviction could bring.

Indicted on felony counts with Karen Burton and Brewster were Danny Combs and Brewster's mother, Frankie Brewster. Another man not previously arrested was indicted Tuesday on a misdemeanor battery charge.

The defendants have denied the charges. Aside from Gregory, their lawyers did not immediately return phone calls on Wednesday.

I'm not goin to comment too much on this story, bcuz focusing on it will make me want to take it out on all of the wonderful non-black people I know. And I would never want to hurt or offend my co-workers, blog family, family members etc in that way. Also, I just don't have the anger, time nor the energy to be prejudiced (anymore). I must remember these people are perverts who happen to be white. Not perverts becuz they're white.

I pray that Megan (and her mom) is able to bounce back 100%, God is able-and I hope the suspects are tried in court and reap what they have sown-and one day they'll understand the detriment of their acts and become remorseful and repentant. No person deserves to be treated as Megan (or any other crime, torture victim) have.

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) -- Police are investigating Internet postings of someone posing as the woman linked to an online hoax played on a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide.

The woman's family believes the postings are an effort to damage its reputation following the death of Megan Meier.
A blog entitled "Megan Had It Coming" surfaced more than two weeks ago. Earlier this week, the person writing the blog claimed the messages were being written by Lori Drew.
Lori Drew's attorney said Friday that she is not the writer.
The St. Charles County sheriff's department is investigating the blog postings on Blogger.com to see whether a crime has been committed, a spokesman said.
"Any Internet message that purports to be a member of the Drew family is being managed by an impostor and undoubtedly is being done for the purpose of further damaging the Drews' reputation," the family said in a statement.
The detailed blog lays out Drew's would-be motives for getting involved with the MySpace hoax against Meier.

Lori Drew's lawyer, Jim Briscoe, said Google Inc., which owns Blogger.com, has been contacted. A Google spokesman said the company is reviewing the impersonation allegation.
Meier thought she was corresponding over MySpace with a cute boy named "Josh Evans" online. The boy never existed. Instead, Drew, her 18-year-old employee and 13-year-old daughter, and Megan's one-time friend, helped create the hoax.
When messages from the fictional boy and others on the Internet turned cruel, including one stating the world would be better off without her, Megan hanged herself in October 2006.
Drew, a mother of two in her 40s, has denied saying hurtful things to the girl over the Internet, and prosecutors have said they found no grounds for charges against the woman.

Details of the case emerged last month, and the story drew international attention.
Since then, the Drews have been besieged with negative publicity, and Meier's death prompted her hometown of Dardenne Prairie to adopt a law engaging in Internet harassment a misdemeanor.
Now, elected officials say the law's first use could be to prevent possible harassment against the Drews.
"I would say that would be a possibility, that they could be the first," Mayor Pam Fogarty said Friday. "A law is a law is a law. You can't discriminate."
Briscoe said the Drews have not asked police to look into the blog postings.
St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas said he heard about the postings through the news media and asked the sheriff's department to investigate.
Banas said he had no idea if someone might be charged under the Dardenne Prairie measure. He explained any charges he brings are under state law, not under local ordinances.
The prosecutor said Internet harassment and stalking are crimes in Missouri under state law, but noted the sheriff's department is still investigating if a crime has been committed.

Whether a blogger is guilty of this or not, the fact that most likely an adult contributed to the death of this child is disgusting. Kids have so much on their plates today...to think that an adult with nothing else better to do but torment a kid...sigh...I'll just say I hope charges are brought against the perpetrator. I just wish she could've received the help she needed before she decided to take her own life.

We as parents must watch , monitor and ask our children questions. Who cares if they get upset?? THIS IS OUR JOB--TO PARENT.

Sometimes we have to invade our children's privacy-it's ugly, it's unethical--but it can save our babies' lives! There are free online monitoring services-I use K9 Protection, to help me keep tabs on my kids online activities. Do they like it? Of course not, but I'm going to do all that I can as a parent to protect my kids. I am blessed that I've taught my kids thru words, actions and deeds, that it's ok to stand up for yourself-and SAY NO- and if that doesn't work, come to me or another family member and we'll find a resolution.

I wish Megan could've found her inner strength. Hopefully, her story will propel parents to become proactive, instead of reactive after their kids off themselves.
