Latina Williams' Mother Releases Statement regarding the LA Technical College Tragedy

UPDATE: Jennie Williams, the mother of accused shooter, Latina Williams, released a statement Saturday through the Baton Rouge Police Department. The family requests that the media respect their privacy and not contact them during this difficult time. The statement follows:

"We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of Karsheika Graves and Tanieshia Butler. Our hearts go out to all of you.

In this tragedy, just like you, we have many questions but no answers. As Latina's mother, I will not try to rationalize or make excuses for her action. It was wrong.

I know nothing I can say will make this situation any better, but I am so very sorry for your pain and loss. I pray God will give you strength to come through this.

I will be haunted to the end of my days by what my child has done."



There will be a candlelight memorial vigil to honor the victims of the shooting. It is scheduled for Sunday evening at 5:15.

Keeping it real-looking at her pic-I'd never guess in a million years, Latina Williams would be capable of pulling a trigger on two people let alone herself.
My mind is blown away.
What in Latina's world, happened that made her snap?
We know of situations with other shooters...what made Latina, "go there?"
I wonder if we'll ever know.
I pray that God covers and protects the victims' children. That their steps are ordered and God protect them from hurt, harm, and danger, which may be a direct result of losing their moms in such a tragic way.
Lord i ask that forgiveness be the families' portion.
I pray for peace in Jesus' name-amen.

OPRAH, WHOOPI DISSED DURING IKE TURNER MEMORIAL: Phil Spector blames them and other 'black sisters' for 'demonizing Ike.'

*Little Richard and Bonnie Raitt were among the hundreds paying final respects to rock pioneer Ike Turner Friday at his funeral in Los Angeles – but the ceremony was not without drama.


The service at Greater Bethany Community Church City of Refuge in Gardena lasted nearly three hours and included performances of Turner's greatest hits (including "Nutbush City Limits" and "Proud Mary") by his eight-piece band, the Kings of Rhythm.


The ceremony began with a montage of photos from throughout Turner's life set to his song "Jesus Loves Me," which features the refrain "I'm a bad boy, but Jesus loves me anyway."

"Daddy wouldn't want any of us crying," said Turner's daughter, Mia Turner, according to the Associated Press. "He would want us to throw a party."

Little Richard described his friend as "one of the greatest musicians I have ever met in my life," and told mourners that Turner's breakthrough rock 'n' roll hit, "Rocket 88," "shook my soul."

"I took that same introduction and made `Good Golly, Miss Molly,'" he said. "I took that same thing and made a huge hit."

Veteran music producer and murder suspect Phil Spector also spoke at the service, and had much to say about Ike Turner's contribution to American music being overshadowed by his exposure as a drug addict and abusive husband following the publication of ex-wife Tina Turner's biography, "I, Tina," and biopic, "What's Love Got to Do With It."


Spector told mourners: "First of all, the things that were said about Ike, that were in that piece-of-trash movie they made about him were ... (applause), it was a piece-of-trash movie."


In the film, a scene shows Spector approaching Ike and Tina after a television performance and requesting that Tina, played by Angela Bassett, sing lead on his song, "River Deep, Mountain High," without Ike. The movie depicts the slight as causing Ike, played by Laurence Fishburne, to have even more jealousy against Tina, which manifests in further physical abuse.

"I haven't seen the movie but it was told to me, and [Barney] Kessel was the world's greatest guitar player in the world and the only reason that Ike didn't play on 'River Deep, Mountain High' was because Ike was the second greatest guitar player in the world," Spector told the crowd, according to a witness quoted by Fox.com columnist Roger Friedman. "I treasured him and everybody knew it except Ike. That's how good he was.


"Ike made Tina the jewel she was. When I went to see Ike play at the Cinegrill in the '90s after his absurd reason for being sent to prison for no reason other than being a black man in America, there were at least, and I counted them, five Tina Turners on the stage performing that night, any one of them could have been Tina Turner."


According to Friedman, Spector also lit into Oprah Winfrey for inviting Tina Turner on her talk show in the early 90s to discuss "I, Tina," her autobiography that includes accounts of the physical abuse she suffered during her marriage to Ike.


"She made Tina Turner's book into a bestseller, which demonized and vilified Ike," Spector reportedly said. "The book wouldn't have sold 10 books. It was badly written. It was a piece of trash and because Oprah idolized Tina, she didn't feel it wrong to vilify a 'brother.'


"Other black sisters did the same thing to Ike and there was a very famous story about Whoopi Goldberg, who had a television show for about five minutes, interviewed Ike. Ike had called me and said, 'Shall I do the show?' I said, 'You can't get hurt.' And he said, 'OK, I'm going to do it.' And we figured it would be good because it's Whoopi and Whoopi asked him, 'I understand before you were married when you were living together, you beat the hell out of her and she tried to commit suicide because she was so terrified of you and she tried to jump out of a window,' and Ike said, 'Yeah, but it's hard to jump out of a window from a basement floor.'"


Spector said part of the reason he became disillusioned with the record business was because he could not make Ike and Tina as big of an act as he wanted.

"I wanted them to be the biggest revue in America. They were the first act that I recorded that ever could play big-time and break it in Vegas and America," said Spector, who stood trial for murder earlier this year for the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson. A judge declared a mistrial in September after jurors failed to reach a verdict.


Many speakers alluded to Turner's personal woes, though none directly addressed his history of drug and domestic abuse.


"Stop holding this mess — whatever it is — against this man. Even Jesus forgives," said Richard, 75, who left the service early, aided by a walker and several assistants.

Ike Turner Jr., who brought his father's two Grammy Awards on stage, told the crowd: "He made billions and billions and billions of people happy. He had the best life."


The service concluded with scores of mourners gathering near Turner's casket, which sat beneath a guitar-shaped wreath made of white flowers. A 10-piece horn-and-drum ensemble played as mourners left the church, reports AP. source

Having said that, great interest has been generated concerning the welfare of Kanye West. KEKE WYATT'S 'GHETTO ROSE' BLOOMS: Singer discusses 'the incident' (not!) and new disc that's 'coming soon.'

*After a very successful 2000 collabo with R&B star Avant on the track "My First Love," singer Keke Wyatt, then just 16 years old, was on the rise in the music industry.

Fresh from that hit, she released her 2001 debut album “Soul Sister,” which churned out the single and was certified Gold.

Wyatt was on the fast track of stardom, but the brakes compressed after a Christmas Day incident that she’s almost become more known for than her soulful voice.

The “incident,” as she refers to it, was a domestic dispute Wyatt had with her husband Rahmat Morton where she stabbed him five times with a steak knife on December 25, 2001. Morton did not press charges; the police charges were eventually dropped, and Wyatt served no time for the episode.

With not much further detail, Wyatt explained that today her husband is still “in her life” – which seems appropriate since she penned the Pussycat Dolls hit “Stickwitu.”

Nevertheless, with that behind her, Wyatt started to take a break from recording and then channeled her vigorous passion and energy into her music, creating her latest album offering, “Ghetto Rose,” which as far as we can tell, has gone from being on TVT Record’s October release schedule to “Coming Soon” according her MySpace Page.

“After I took the time off to get Keke straight, I had a deal with Cash Money [Records] and I was with them for about two years,” she said explaining her studio hiatus, “but that didn’t work out well for the simple fact of [Hurricane Katrina]. It put a damper on everything and everybody over there and I felt I didn’t have time to wait.”

Clearly a woman of action, Wyatt shopped her wares at the afore mentioned TVT Records and scored a deal with the indie label. That was over a year ago, but Wyatt explained that in addition to prepping music for the disc, she had to prepare herself.
“After the ‘Christmas incident’ I had to get myself together emotionally and spiritually,” she said. “I had to make sure I was OK before I could come back out and get back in this grind. It’s rough and people have their comments and their way of thinking, so you just want to make sure you’re prepared for that.”

Which leads to Wyatt’s latest fight: seems the songstress has taken issue with an Essence.com reporter/interview over an August interview, claiming she was misquoted in the story in regard to her take on race, skin color and the N-word. “They always will take a story and turn it all around and make it completely different than what it was. I know that, so I had to take some time off,” she said and resolved not to open herself up in interviews anymore.

Fortunately, the singer did talk to EUR’s Lee Bailey to share her side, refocus and talk more about the new album. She said that the Christmas incident and the Essence.com qualms are not what are really important right now.


“At the end of the day, all I really want is for people to buy my album. That’s what I want,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what color I am. It doesn’t matter how I look. None of that matters. At the end of the day, if you love good music, if you enjoy R&B – that’s what I sing and that’s what I do best.


“Ghetto Rose” - the title track from the new project - is available digitally at iTunes. It's also created a modicum of interest, and received quite good reviews. Wyatt describes the sophomore album as focusing on relationship issues, and includes her take on things that she’s experienced as well as what some around her have dealt with.


“It has a lot to do with things I’ve seen my best friends go through. I just want to be able to help girls that might be in the same situation that I was in. I want to help them get out of whatever they might be going through. This album really hits home on a lot of situations in relationships. I have make up, breakup – you name it, it’s in there. It’s real life. It’s real R&B.”


Wyatt’s real life appears to have enough material for a number of discs as she’s admitted to being bumped around in life, the music industry, and the media. But the singer said that she will continue to fight her battles to make sure her fans get what they want.


“I love music and I have so many fans out there that bought ‘Soul Sister’, that love my music and love me for who I am – as far as they know, and love me for my music and my voice, so I fight for them,” she said. “I’m a fan of other artists and I want music from them, though I know they go through hard times. I have over 500,000 people out there that love Keke Wyatt, so that’s why I fight so hard. I go through the crap that I go through for my fans. It’s worth it.”


Though concerned about how she’s handled by the media and viewed by the public, Wyatt is determined to share her talent with the new “Ghetto Rose” album, even though she’s realized that everything’s not always so rosy.


“I’m very happy about my album coming out. And I love touring, I love meeting people, I love singing to people. I’m looking forward to it so much,” she said. “I love my fans very much and I thank them for being supportive and patient with me through all this time.”
