80's African Model, Katoucha found dead...

PARIS, France (AP) -- The body of Katoucha Niane, one of the first African women to attain international stardom as a model and a vocal opponent of female genital mutilation, was found in the Seine River, police said Friday.

The body of former top model Katoucha Niane has been found in the river Seine.

Known simply as Katoucha, the former top model for Yves Saint Laurent and other top designers was found Thursday near the Garigliano bridge in Paris, judicial police in Paris said.

An autopsy showed no signs of foul play, pointing to the possibility that the 47-year-old may have fallen accidentally into the river, they said.

She had been missing since January and was last seen returning home from a party. She lived in a houseboat near Paris' Alexandre III bridge, and her handbag was later found on the boat.

The Guinean-born model told The Associated Press in 1994 that she ran away to Europe at 17 aiming to be a model. Her big break came when Jules-Francois Crahay, then the designer at Lanvin, spotted her in a line-up. The label hired her as a fitting model. Her first catwalk modeling was for Thierry Mugler at the start of the 1980s.

After quitting the runway, she turned to speaking out actively against female circumcision, describing her own experience at age 9 in a book, "Katoucha, In My Flesh," which was published last year.

"I will never get the incomparable pain out of my head," she wrote in the book, which she dedicated to her three children.

Vanity Fair's fashion and style director, Michael Roberts, said Katoucha was "one those girls who used her fame to spotlight the misfortunes of others."

"She always seemed so gracious and very lovely," he said. "She was sunny and she was bright, and I liked her a lot."

Katoucha set up her own label in 1994 after years of modeling for the likes of Christian Lacroix and Saint Laurent. Singers Cher and France's Johnny Hallyday were among the stars who turned out for her show.

"I don't pretend to be like Lacroix, Saint Laurent or the others," she said at the time. "But I was certainly in a great school by wearing their clothes and going to the fittings. I learned several basic lessons, including: Don't cut the fabric until you've got the 'toile,' or heavy linen prototype, just right."

Katoucha was the daughter of Djibril Tamsir Niane, an archaeologist and writer. She said that her father was initially disappointed that she didn't become "a professional intellectual, with a university degree," but later reconciled to her other successes source

God bless Katoucha's children, family & friends...

You Are An Inspiration: MZ DEIDRA!

Mz. Deidra of 'Black And Missing'
A Voice In The Wilderness...
SmileyCentral.com

While working on the post for Karyn McConnell Hancock, I researched via Google, the subject of missing black women and little or no media coverage.

Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon a blog that is dedicated to missing/found/or recovered black people who's garnered little or no media attention.
SmileyCentral.com

Check out Mz.
Deidra's blog and add it to your blogroll:
Black and Missing but Not Forgotten

The dedication that's necessary to continually update a blog of this type is nothing short of divine.

Deidra refers to herself as "Just a concerned black female :)"
I beg to differ.
Deidra has chosen to become a warrior in the fight against disparate treatment of minorities in the media-and has wielded her blog as her weapon.

And for that I say
SmileyCentral.com

Not only is keeping up this type of blog an arduous one, but it can be frustrating, as well as rewarding. Check out an interview with Deidra: Deidra Speaks. I too remember the case of Stepha Henry and the planned interview surrounding her disappearance. I also remember MSNBC decided Paris Hilton going to jail took precedent over a black woman who was missing. Ratings wouldn't be high enough.
I was heated!

Deidra, I just wanted to throw some love your way...I can't imagine how much comfort you've brought to the missing people's families and loved ones-knowing they indeed are not alone.
God bless you!

Check Your Blood Pressure, Before It Checks YOU!

Recently, someone close to me revealed his fight with Hypertension. In light of recent media reports regarding deadly Staph Infections and other maladies, it's easy to forget about Hypertension. But we shouldn't forget it, as it predominantly affects the black community in an adverse way.
Brian has had this "1000lb gorilla"(as he refers to Hypertension) riding his back, for over 10 years now.
Today, you or someone you know is fighting this same fight. I have at least 3 people in my family, and the youngest was diagnosed in her early 20's.

Please take the time to scroll down and read Brian's story below (look at the statistics!) and offer words of encouragement to him on his blog Brian's blog.
He's one of us, and I'm sure he'd appreciate the love & edification.

Hello World!

Instead of writing about the "going on's" of my life, I decided to touch on an illness that I suffer with that is known as the "silent killer", High Blood Pressure.

I equate having High Blood Pressure with having a 1000 pound gorilla riding your back. For me it zaps me of energy, causes me tremendous headaches, and at times makes me physically ill. I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure while I was running for State Representative in Tennessee back in 1996. Because of my physical build , I never thought I would be stricken with High Blood Pressure. I always assumed it was a condition "fat " people suffered from.Because I was a high school and college athlete, I have always been in great condition. Yet I failed to take in account that because of a family history of High Blood Pressure, I was a prime candidate to fall prey to this sometimes crippling sickness.

When I was in law school in Birmingham, my condition of High Blood Pressure seem to worsen causing me to go to the hospital on several occasions. There were even times when I would collapse due to elevated pressure, only awakening in the emergency room.

I am on medications now that control my blood pressure, yet I have to be focused on making sure that I take the medicine properly.

This week , I ask all of the readers of the Files of Brian Clay,to monitor your blood pressure. For your family's sake ....They Need you!.... I want you around! STAY HEALTHY!

Oprah, what kind of hiring process is this??

SEXUAL, PHYSICAL ABUSE ALLEGATIONS AT OPRAH'S SCHOOL: Host flies in over weekend to personally assess the situation.
source

*More details of the alleged misconduct by a dorm parent at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa have surfaced. According to Fox News, an Afrikaans-language newspaper reported that the female employee is accused of various incidents of physical and sexual abuse against the students.

The woman, who has since been removed from the campus, allegedly grabbed a girl by the throat and threw her against a wall. Other alleged charges were that she swore and screamed at the girls, assaulted them and had sexually fondled at least one of them, according to Rapport newspaper.

The alleged incidents went public after one of the pupils ran away from the school because the abuse had become intolerable, according to Rapport. Her parents immediately notified the school.

Winfrey, herself the victim of childhood sexual abuse, immediately caught a flight to South Africa to check on the allegations. She is said to have arrived just over a week ago, missing an important Hollywood engagement. She then returned unexpectedly on Friday and left again on Sunday, reports Fox News.

The TV mogul met with the school’s executive and private investigators and held a two-hour meeting with the parents of her students, who were flown to Johannesburg from all over the country. A report by a private investigator flown in from the United States to conduct an inquiry with a South African counterpart has been turned over to the local police.

In her only public comment about the incident, Winfrey issued a statement saying: “Nothing is more serious or devastating to me than an allegation of misconduct by an adult against any girl at the academy.”

Ok, Oprah.
You offended many Americans after you opened your school in the Motherland.
But in light of recent events, I'm glad you didn't.
I'm not sure what the hiring process is over there, but it seems pervs slip thru the cracks over there, just like in America!
It takes more than throwing your name on top of a building, you need hands on involvement, and I don't mean like the kind that female employee (above) exhibited.
I pray that you and your team screen these potential employees more closely. Just because they live in the motherland doesn't mean ulterior motives do not run amok there as well.
I'm sure you'll be able to put a "spin'' on this when you return home.
Please see to it that those young ladies receive counseling...and put the perv under the school!
You betta recognize Oprah, issues ARE UNIVERSAL!

MEDIA ADVISORY

WARREN BALLENTINE "THE PEOPLE’S ATTORNEY" IS CALLING FOR ALL AFRICAN AMERICANS TO PARTICIPATE IN A NATIONAL BLACKOUT"

WHO: Warren Ballentine "The People’s Attorney" and radio Truth Fighter is calling for National Blackout throughout America.

WHAT: Warren is calling for a National Blackout that is necessary for African Americans, and is long over due. Especially with all the present injustices that are being allowed and accepted in America right now. From the situation with Mychal Bell and the Jena 6, Genarlow Wilson, Megan Williams, and all of the nooses being hung all of America lately. Until we have federal legislation regarding hate crimes as African Americans we need to band together to show our "Economic Power" by refusing to spend ANY money from fast food restaurants to gas.

WHY: As African Americans we spend an estimated 715 billion dollars a year, and if we were to stop spending for one day that is 2 billion dollar that will not in the system. However we ask that you don’t make a mad dash to the stores days prior or the days following. If the stores have a major increase in sales right before or right after the Blackout than we will create the impact we need.

WHEN: Friday, November 2, 2007

WHERE: Nationwide Blackout for ALL African Americans
****
America, for those of us who couldn't participate directly with Jena6...here's another chance. We want to put a dent in retailers' pockets. One thing i've noticed people are QUICK TO COMPLAIN, but slow to act. Here's your chance to be counted. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ON NOV 2ND. It's one day. SHOP BEFORE, AFTER, OR BOTH.
Parents...please teach your children about history.
We have some of the clueless (i.e., dumb) children walking around here, because PARENTS, GUARDIAN ETC do not TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN.
Spread the word...DO NOT MAKE PURCHASES ON NOV 2ND.
Stop talking...and start walking. Be counted.
