CDC: 82 kids dead from 'choking game'

At least 82 youths have died from the so-called "choking game," according to the first government count of fatalities from the tragic fad.

In the game, children use dog leashes, bungee cords wrapped around their necks or other means to temporarily cut blood flow to their head. The goal is a dreamlike, floating-in-space feeling when blood rushes back into the brain.


As many as 20 percent of teens and preteens play the game, sometimes in groups, according to some estimates based on a few local studies. But nearly all the deaths were youths who played alone, according to the count complied by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC started the research after receiving a letter last year from a Tacoma, Wash., physician who said her 13-year-old son died from playing the game in 2005.

"At the time I had never heard of this," said Dr. Patricia Russell, whose son was found hanging in his closet, but later learned he had talked to a friend about it.

The CDC counted reports from media and advocacy organizations in the years 1995 through 2007, totaling 82 fatalities of children ages 6 to 19. They did not include deaths in which it was unclear if the death was from the choking game or if it was a suicide. They also did not include deaths that involved autoerotic asphyxiation, which is self-strangulation during masturbation and is said to be mainly done by adult males.

The 82 deaths were spread across the country. Nearly 90 percent were boys, at an average age of about 13, the CDC found.

The report is being published this week in a CDC publication, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

CDC officials urged parents to be aware the fad exists, and to watch for possible warning signs like bloodshot eyes, marks on the neck, frequent and severe headaches, disorientation after spending time alone, and ropes, scarves or belts tied to bedroom furniture or doorknobs or found knotted on the floor.

The authors acknowledged that 82 is probably an undercount. They could not rely on death certificates, which do not differentiate choking-game deaths from other unintentional strangulation deaths. Instead, they relied mainly on a news database that is large but doesn't include all media outlets.

It's likely that there are about 100 U.S. choking game deaths each year, said Dr. Tom Andrew, New Hampshire's chief medical examiner, who has been studying the phenomenon for several years.

Andrew said many coroners and medical examiners likely label the deaths as suicides because they don't have the time or resources to interview a victim's friends and look for alternate explanations.

Many of the children who died form the choking game were described as bright, athletic students who apparently were intrigued by a method of getting high that doesn't involve drugs or alcohol, he said.

It has not been documented as to where or when the pics were taken. Looking in lil Bobbi's friend hand...I can see the metal mouth tip of a pipe. They're smokin' like a G, wonder how long has she been smoking?? Conflicting reports states Bobbi Kristina is 13 or 14.

TUUSULA, Finland - An 18-year-old gunman opened fire at his high school in this placid town in southern Finland on Wednesday, killing seven other students and the principal before mortally wounding himself in a rampage that stunned a nation where gun crime is rare.
Police were analyzing YouTube postings that appeared to anticipate the massacre, including clips in which a young man calls for revolution and apparently prepares for the attack by test firing a semiautomatic handgun.

Investigators said the gunman, who was not identified, shot himself in the head after the shooting spree at Jokela High School in Tuusula, some 30 miles north of the capital, Helsinki. He died later at Toolo Hospital in Helsinki.

The teen killed five boys, two girls and the female principal with a .22-caliber pistol, police said. Officials said one person was wounded by a bullet and about a dozen others suffered cuts and other injuries while fleeing the school. Officials said more than 400 students ages 12 through 18 were enrolled.

Witnesses described a scene of mayhem at the school in this leafy lakeside community, saying the shooter prowled the building looking for victims while shouting slogans for "revolution."
Police Chief Matti Tohkanen said the gunman didn't have a previous criminal record. "He was from an ordinary family," Tohkanen said. He said the teen belonged to a gun club and had gotten a license for the pistol Oct. 19.

Gun ownership is fairly common in Finland by European standards, but deadly shootings are rare. Finnish media reported that a school shooting in 1989 involved a 14-year-old boy who killed two other students apparently for teasing him.
Investigators were searching for connections to the shooter and a possible motive in YouTube postings that appeared to reveal plans for Wednesday's deadly attack.

One video, titled "Jokela High School Massacre," showed a picture of what appeared to be the Jokela school and two photos of a young man holding a handgun. The person who posted the video was identified in the user profile as an 18-year-old man from Finland. The posting was later removed.

The profile contained a text calling for a "revolution against the system."
Another video clip showed a young man clad in a dark jacket loading a clip into a handgun and firing several shots at an apple placed on the ground in a wooded area. He smiled and waved to the camera at the end of the clip.

A third clip showed photos of what appeared to be same man posing with a gun and wearing a T-shirt with the text "Humanity is overrated."
Kim Kiuru, a teacher, said the principal announced over the public address system just before noon that all students should remain in their classrooms.

"After that I saw the gunman running with what appeared to be a small-caliber handgun in his hand through the doors toward me, after which I escaped to the corridor downstairs and ran in the opposite direction," Kiuru told reporters.
He said he saw a woman's body as he fled the building.

"Then my pupils shouted at me out of the windows to ask what they should do and I told them to jump out of the windows ... and all my pupils were saved," Kiuru said.

Terhi Vayrynen, a 17-year-old student, told The Associated Press that her brother Henri, 13, and his classmates had witnessed the assailant shoot the principal outside the school through their classroom windows.
She said the gunman then entered her brother's classroom shouting: "Revolution! Smash everything!"

When no one did anything, the attacker shot the television set and windows but did not fire at the youngsters, she said. Then he ran out and down the corridor.
Vivianna Korhonen, a student at the high school, told Finnish broadcaster YLE she feared for her life as news of the shooting spread through the building.

"We were terrified and afraid. We thought that we might die as he was still able to come to our classroom," she said. "We were informed all the time. We were calling our friends and asking for information."
Residents in Tuusula, a town of 34,000 people, said such attacks were unheard of in the area.
"Mostly nothing happens here, this is nice surroundings and not any criminals to talk of. This was a total surprise," said Reijo Pekka, whose son Arttu Siltala was at the school.

Students said the killer often wore the same clothes to school — brown leather jacket, black trousers and checkered shirt — and usually carried a briefcase.
Tuomas Hulkkonen, another student, said he knew the gunman well, adding that the teen had been acting strange lately.

"He withdrew into his shell. I had noticed a change in him just recently, and I thought that perhaps he was a bit depressed, or something, but I couldn't imagine that in reality he would do anything like this," Hulkkonen told Finnish TV broadcaster MTV3.

Experts warned that the shooting could inspire copycat attacks.
"An event like this in Finland might have an effect in the U.S.," said Christopher P. Lucas, a psychiatry professor at New York University.
He said YouTube provides a ready way for shooters to publicize their acts and provide some sort of justification.

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen described the bloodshed as "extremely tragic" and declared Thursday a day of national mourning with flags to be flown half-staff.

I'm wondering if this kid had the same struggles in school as in the States...was he teased and bullied unmercilessly? Was this reported and the teachers did nothing? Did he feel overlooked, isolated-odd man out? Every high school shooting i've read about was by a young male, who was ostracized, bullied, teased etc who finally said "I'm mad as hell and i'm not going to take this anymore."

This is a global issue-what's going to be done to prevent this in the future??

*A noose was mailed to the African American principal of Canarsie High School in Brooklyn along with a letter containing racially-charged comments, the New York Times reports.

The mailing was delivered over the weekend to principal Tyona Washington, who is in her first year at the school. The package was opened Monday morning. The letter, found around 10:30 a.m., was signed with the name of a white administrator at the school, police said, adding that they believed that the signature was not genuine.

According to the police, the letter did not make any direct threats but said, “I’ll give you enough rope to hang yourself.” The letter also included the words “white power forever” and included a racial slur, said authorities.

The incident follows a rash of noose-related activity sprouting from the Jena Six case, in which race-based fights were sparked at a high school after three white students hung nooses from a tree to rankle black students.

The Canarsie episode was at least the eighth time in the past few weeks that a noose was discovered in the New York area alone. As previously reported, a noose was placed on the doorknob of the office of a black professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College.

The hate crimes unit of the Police Department is investigating, but the police said yesterday that there were no suspects. Rev. Al Sharpton was to appear outside of the Federal Building in Atlanta yesterday to announce plans for a Nov. 16th March on Washington to protest the outbreak of hate crimes around the country.

Meanwhile, a coalition of major American media companies filed a 1st Amendment petition Monday seeking to unseal the criminal trial of Mychal Bell, one of the teenage defendants in the controversial Jena Six case in Louisiana.

The legal motion, filed in LaSalle Parish District Court, challenges the decisions by presiding Judge J.P. Mauffray to close the proceedings in Bell's juvenile case and order all the parties involved not to speak about it. Mauffray's orders run counter to Louisiana juvenile laws, precedents set by the Louisiana Supreme Court and provisions of both the Louisiana and U.S. Constitutions, the petition asserts.

The Chicago Tribune is the lead plaintiff in the petition, which has been joined by the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times Co., the Associated Press, the Hearst Corp., the Belo Corp., the Gannett Corp., CNN and ABC News.

Bell, 17, is one of six black teenagers charged in an attack last Dec. 4 at Jena High School in which a white student was beaten and knocked briefly unconscious. That incident capped months of violent racial tensions in the small, mostly white central Louisiana town that was also sparked after the three white youths hung nooses from the tree.

Should he get it yay? or nay? In my humble opinion, I say "yay." I believe he incurred (most) debts by trying to keep up with his wife--not the Jones'. I believe he was attempting to live up to her convolutedly, warped expectations. But as I said...that's my humble opinion. Juanita Bynum's estranged husband, Bishop Thomas Weeks III, recently filed his response to Bynum's divorce filing.
In the filing, Weeks -- like Bynum -- is seeking relief in the divorce, alimony or other support granted by the court. He also asked that the debt be split equitably, not in half. The response was filed in Gwinnett County Superior Court on October 3.
In an article published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, one of Weeks' attorneys said he is trying his best not to make specific requests; he is going to take the high road.
Bynum's publicist said the televangelist had no comment.
Bynum has accused Weeks of beating, stomping and choking her in an Atlanta hotel parking lot on August 21. Weeks was charged with felony aggravated assault, felony terrorist threats and simple battery.
Weeks' attorney said his client has not ruled out adding other arguments in his response to the divorce petition.
