BLACK COLUMBIA PROFESSOR REACTS TO NOOSE: Woman wants perpetrator to know she 'will not be silenced.'

A rally was held Wednesday at Columbia University to protest the discovery of a noose on the office door of an African-American professor.

The target, Madonna Constantine, 44, is a professor of psychology and education at Columbia's Teachers College, where the noose was found Tuesday hanging from her office door knob. She co-wrote the book "Addressing Racism: Facilitating Cultural Competence in Mental Health and Educational Settings."

Constantine issued a statement saying, "I am upset that the Teachers College community has been exposed to such an unbelievably vile incident, and I would like us to stay strong in the face of such a blatant act of racism. Hanging the noose on my office door reeks of cowardice and fear on many levels. I want the perpetrator to know that I will not be silenced."

The New York Police Department is investigating the matter as a hate crime, reports CNN.
The building, which is open 24 hours a day, is accessible only to those with a Teachers College ID card or other credentials. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified, police said.

University President Lee Bollinger denounced the incident in a statement sent out to the Columbia University community: "Tolerance and mutual respect are among the core values of our diverse community, and all of us must confront acts of hate whenever they occur within it. As I said last night, an attack on the dignity of any member of our community is an assault on all of us."

A black student at a secondary school for the hearing impaired in Washington D.C. was held against his will and marked with racist comments during an incident last weekend.

The words "KKK" and swastikas were drawn on the skin of the deaf victim, who was tied up for about 45 minutes before being released, according to Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier. He quickly notified dorm and school authorities, who called police.

Police have identified and interviewed the students involved and the "investigation is ongoing," Lanier said Wednesday. As of press time, no charges had been filed, and no names have been released. The incident, however, could result in criminal charges with "enhanced penalties for a hate crime," said Lanier.

Trouble started brewing when a group of black students and a group of white students began rough-housing in a dorm. "My understanding is the two groups engaged in friendly horseplay," Lanier said. But, she added, the groups got "angry with each other."

The two groups separated, she said, but later, six white students and one black student -- all between the ages of 15 and 19 -- took one of the black students into a dorm room and "held him there against his will."
"They used markers to write 'KKK' and draw swastikas on the student," Lanier said. They also tied up his hands so he was unable to communicate in sign language.

The residential high school is located on the campus of Gallaudet University, a higher education facility for deaf and hard of hearing people. The high school is administered as a division of the university's Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center.

Dean of Clerc Center Katherine A. Jankowski said the seven students who participated in the incident were sent home. Gallaudet provost Stephen Weiner said the school does "not tolerate any action, behavior of this type."

"We are taking action," he said. "We are looking at programs to help students understand we are a school with a diverse population. …This incident is intolerable. That's why the Metro police are involved. That's how serious we are about this incident."

*Classes at historically black Delaware State University were cancelled and the campus put on lock down early Friday after the shooting of two students following an apparent argument.
University spokesman Carlos Holmes said police had identified "two persons of interest" -- both students -- one of whom was already in custody. He told reporters it appeared the shooting followed an argument in a campus cafeteria.



One of the wounded students was a female who had "potentially life-threatening" injuries, while the other, a male, was in "stable condition," at a local hospital, he said. Both are from Washington D.C. The female was shot twice and the male once.



Delaware State University Police Chief James Overton said in a statement that between 8 and 10 students had left a campus cafeteria between midnight and 1 a.m. and "a gun was produced in the area among those people and four to six shots were fired."



The university alerted students to the incident by telephone, the Web site and by flyers, a statement on its Web site said. Students and staff who were not on the campus were told to stay away until further notice. The university directed nonessential personnel not to report to work.



"I don't think any institution in the country did not learn from Virginia Tech and we certainly did," Holmes said on CNN when asked about decision to lock down the campus.



Founded in 1891, the historically black university has about 3,300 undergraduate students on a 400-acre residential campus about 100 miles northeast of D.C.

DOVER, Del., Sept. 24 (AP) — The police arrested an 18-year-old man Monday in last week’s shooting of two students at Delaware State University, the authorities said. As he was led into a courthouse, the man, Loyer D. Braden, told reporters, “I’m sorry.”

Mr. Braden, who is from East Orange, N.J., was charged with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment, and also faced a gun charge, according to court documents.
Mr. Braden appeared before a justice of the peace and was ordered held in $75,000 bail. He was also ordered to stay away from the victims and the university.



Nathaniel Pugh III and Shalita Middleton, two 17-year-old students from Washington, were hurt early Friday in the attack. Ms. Middleton suffered serious abdominal injuries from two gunshots and is hospitalized. Mr. Pugh was shot once in the ankle.
Mr. Braden was also accused of firing at a third student, James Richmond, according to the documents describing the reckless endangerment charge.



Four Dover police officers escorted Mr. Braden to the court on Monday afternoon with his hands cuffed and his legs shackled. In response to reporters’ questions, he said softly, “I’m sorry.” Asked what he was sorry for, he replied only, “She’s in the hospital.”



Mr. Braden graduated in June from Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, N.J., where he played basketball and football.

Black people are protesting Mychal Bell's incarceration in Jena, LA and we have youth who commit crimes intentionally-knowing they'll end up behind bars! What is really going on?! I'm going to leave this one alone. My prayers are with all of the families, and in Jesus' name I pray that a laborer be sent to Loyer--there are many Christians who are incarcerated as well.
