DETROIT - A defiant Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick quickly rejected the City Council's call Tuesday for him to resign because of accusations that he lied under oath about not having an affair.
"You take a whole day to discuss an issue like this," he said. "My reaction is: This is over. It has no effect. It's not binding. Let's get back to work."

The resolution, passed 7-1, amounted to a "no-confidence" vote because the council lacks the power to force Kilpatrick to step down.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is investigating whether the mayor and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty lied under oath when they testified in a whistle-blowers' lawsuit that they had not had a physical relationship.

Kilpatrick has been dogged by media reports about steamy text messages the two exchanged that suggest a romantic relationship.

The mayor said he could not comment on the text messages on Beatty's pager. Beatty resigned from her post in February.

City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. would like Kilpatrick to do the same. "The message is, it's time to call it quits," he said.

The lone vote against the resolution was cast by President Pro Tem Monica Conyers, the wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers. One councilwoman was absent because of illness.

"I believe that we have to do what's fair," Monica Conyers said following the vote. "Based upon the evidence that was presented to me, there's nothing there yet for us to say 'resign.'"

The council considered the issue two weeks ago but postponed a vote because some members said they needed more information before they could decide what to do.

"A whole lot has changed between then and now. ... My vote is not an indictment of the mayor so much as it is a request of the citizens to get back to work," said Councilwoman Barbara-Rose Collins, who supported the measure.

Worthy has said she expects a decision next week on whether she will seek perjury charges against Kilpatrick and Beatty. source

We as women take pride in the strength that God has blessed us with. However, there exists a SPECIAL class of WOMEN who are as strong as a petrified tree, or better yet,. a T-bone steak that I've cooked. Hey-it's the truth anyhow. I admit it-I'm nowhere near as strong as Carlita Kilpatrick, Detroit's Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's wife. She has endured a woman's worse nightmare-a rogue husband. Kwame's been on the wild, for years now and she's handled it and processed it her own way. It's one thing to assume your husband's a lowdown dirty son-of a gun, but it's another to have your concerns and suspicions confirmed with textual evidence (and receipts) splashed across national news. Carlita, I seriously don't know how you do it-I'm Christian as well, but there's no way in the world I'd share the same bed, room, air, atmosphere-let alone the same TV screen, with the likes of Kwame-Just keepin' it real :)

The bible says in 1Corinthians 13th chapter, that loves covers a multitude of sins. I'm not sure if habitually cheating on me would be covered under the multitude. Carlita, you have my sympathies and my respect.

DETROIT (AP) — A humble and emotional Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded for the forgiveness of city residents and family members during a prime-time televised speech Wednesday that ended a week of seclusion for the one-time "Hip-Hop Mayor," whose racy text messages to a top aide recently came to light and threaten his political future.

"I truly apologize to you," Kilpatrick said, turning to his wife, Carlita, who sat by her husband's side, holding his hand, at their family church.

He vowed to remain mayor. A prosecutor is investigating whether Kilpatrick and chief of staff Christine Beatty lied under oath during a whistle-blower's lawsuit last summer in which both denied having a physical relationship.

"I remain in charge of the city," he said during the speech delivered in front of a lone TV camera from Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ. There was no audience and no reporters or photographers, save for the one video camera.

Carlita Kilpatrick also spoke, describing the pain her husband had caused, but urging the city to remain committed to him.

"I am angry, I am hurt and I am disappointed," she said. "But there is no question I love my husband."

Kilpatrick, 37, is in his second term and could run again next year. He had been in seclusion since a Detroit Free Press report last week of sexually explicit text messages from 2002 and 2003 found on Beatty's city-issued pager.

The mayor's only public response had been a written statement a week ago.
But on Wednesday night, he and his wife broke their silence during the 10-minute TV appearance designed to salvage his career and reputation.
He asked that his family be left alone.

"I am the mayor. I made the mistake," Kilpatrick said, looking into the camera. "I am accountable."

KWAME KILPATRICK:

Good evening, Detroit. I want to start tonight by saying to the citizens of this great city, I'm sorry.

To all of you who have believed in what we've been doing here since 2002, to all of you who have believed in me and my leadership, to all of you who have stuck with me through very difficult times, to all of you who've prayed for me, I'm sorry.

For the embarrassment and disappointment the events of the past few days have caused you; for what you, as my supporters, many of you, have had to hear as you traveled around the city to beauty shops and barber shops; for what you had to hear when you were in church this past city from people who know that you have supported me; to those of you who have not always been Kwame Kilpatrick supporters but who lift up our city, who live in our city, who support this town in various ways, I truly apologize to each and every one of you individually and to the whole city.

Most of all tonight, I want to make a public apology to my entire family, and specifically to the four people who I love the most in the world. First, I want to apologize to my sons, Jalil and Jelani and son Jonas. For the first time in my life, I had to have a conversation with my 12-year-old twin sons about very grown-up things. It was without a doubt the hardest conversation that I've ever had in my entire life.

Finally, and most important, I want to make a public apology to my wife Carlita, who I fell in love with when I was 19 years old. We decided to build a family together, and we did that. Our marriage has not been perfect, but it has been great. Now I put her in a situation which many couples deal with in the privacy of their own homes. But in our case, it's on the front page of the newspaper.

This dynamic, strong, caring woman has been forced to go through this very difficult experience because of me. I truly apologize to you.

As many of you know, I am not the type of person who displays his emotions in public. But I have to tell you I've felt more emotion in the last week than I have in the last 20 years. I've been truly hurting. I've been hurting because I know that many of you are hurting. And most of all, I've been hurting because I know my family is hurting. And I'm responsible for that.

Over the past few days, there has been some speculation about who is in charge of the city. Make no mistake about it. Since 2002, I have been in charge of the city.

There have been ups and downs, there have been hills and mountains and valleys, but through it all, I remained in charge of the city. I believe we built a team here that understands the mission and focus and the commitment that we must have to serve our citizens. We've done some amazing things, but we have a lot of work left to do.

Over the past few days, there has also been a lot of speculation about me resigning from office. Let me be clear tonight, I would never quit on you, ever. We got a lot of work to do, and with your help I'm going to continue to lead this city in getting the work done.

I am truly blessed and grateful that my wife is beside me tonight. She has some personal remarks of her own to make.

It is very difficult for me to talk to you at this moment, but I want to let you know what is on my heart tonight.

Like all marriages, ours is not perfect. Like all people, we are not perfect, but through our commitment to God and each other, my husband and I will get through this. Yes, I am angry, I am hurt, and I am disappointed. But there is no question that I love my husband. With the help of our pastor and others, we have been having very difficult, very frank discussions to work through some very painful issues.

Most couples who work through problems in their marriage are able to do so privately. Unfortunately, that option is not available to us. Our family has endured the most painful and intrusive week of our lives. Our most intimate issues have been laid out for all to see, for all to comment on, for all to dissect and analyze. However, this private matter is between me, my husband and God.

We are deeply committed to working through these issues together as a family. As his wife, I know how committed my husband is to the city of Detroit. I am asking the citizens of this city to be committed to him, and our family, and to the continued growth of our city.

Allow our family the space and the privacy that is essential to anyone when they work through these very personal issues. Lastly, I would like to thank each and every one of you for all of your prayers and your uplifting words. Thank you.

This has been a very difficult time for my wife and my family. I would ask from this point forward that if you have to attack someone, attack me. I would ask that you don't follow my wife, you don't film my kids going to school. I ask you not to have helicopters flying around our home. I ask that you leave them alone.

Because there are legal matters pending at this moment, unfortunately, I am unable to discuss any of those issues at this time. But I do have some personal words I want to share with you tonight.

Over the past week, our marriage has been opened up for public view. This has been a situation where, yes, it's been embarrassing, yes, it's been painful, but through all of that, through the grace of God, we've also had a feeling of thankfulness and freedom.

We have committed to moving forward together, to make our marriage better and stronger. Last week was the first weekend since I took office in January 2002 that I just put everything aside and focused only on my family.

I know people have been wanting to hear from me, but I needed to do that first. I want to thank the people of Detroit for their patience in allowing us to have that time. We as a family needed to do that. I told my sons this past weekend that when you make a mistake, you learn from it, you get up, you dust yourself off, and you keep moving forward.

Detroit, I am determined that we will keep moving forward. I am determined to continue the tremendous progress we are making in this city.

In the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression, Detroit together, we have managed to do great things. We have paved more streets than ever, we have built more new houses than ever. We have balanced our budget and wiped out a $300 million dollar deficit.

We have developed 75 buildings downtown, large and small, we have built seven new hotels, we have built three new rec centers in neighborhoods that have not seen rec centers in 20 years. We are building out our riverfront, and we are not stopping now.

Detroit, please continue to pray for our family, for our city and for our continued progress.

God bless you, Detroit. I love you, and I'll see you at work tomorrow.

Dear Mayor Kilpatrick,

I would first like to thank you and the citizens of Detroit for the opportunity to have worked for the city that I love so much over the past six years.

Serving as Chief of Staff for the Kilpatrick administration since 2002 has been an honor and a privilege. I was born and raised in Detroit and my childhood goal was always to serve my city. I came back home after college to do just that. Serving our citizens and helping to transform Detroit into an even greater city is what I've been dedicated to everyday since January 2002.

As Chief of Staff, I managed key city departments in such areas as human services and labor relations as well as administering the day to day operations of the Mayor's office. I've served the administration and Detroit citizens with diligence, strength and perserverance and I hope that my efforts will one day show through above all else.

In spite of this, however, I believe that it is clear I can no longer effectively carry out the duties of Chief of Staff. Therefore, this letter serves as my resignation effective, February 8, 2008 to allow for an orderly transition of my duties with the new chief of staff. I painfully regret the devastation that the recent reports have caused to the citizens of Detroit, to my co workers, to the Mayor's family and to my family and friends.

Again, I thank you and the citizens of Detroit for the opportunity to serve.

(AP) - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's chief of staff says she is resigning amid allegations raised last week that she and the mayor lied under oath about an affair. Christine Beatty said today in a letter to Kilpatrick released by his office that her resignation is effective February 8th. Beatty says she believes it's clear that she can no longer effectively carry out her duties. Kilpatrick spokesman James Canning says the mayor's office had no comment on the resignation. A prosecutor on Friday launched an investigation into the allegations. They came to light when the Detroit Free Press reported details of sexually explicit text messages between Beatty and Kilpatrick. source

(Oct. 22) - Iggy isn't the only dog causing talk show Ellen DeGeneres problems.

Los Angeles producer Kerri Randles tells Page Six she gave Ellen a mutt named Stormy two years ago as a gift.


Although Iggy the terrier may not be the first dog Ellen DeGeneres was forced to give away, he certainly made the most headlines. Ellen has currently taken time off from her show to deal with the stress of the situation.

When she called to check on the pooch two months later, Randles found out that DeGeneres had given the dog to a member of her staff.

"She may have had it for much less time than that. I only say two months because that's when I called to check on the dog and found out she no longer had it. I was totally shocked. I thought she was out of her mind," Randles said.

Ellen's pet scandal came to light recently when she tearfully explained on her show how the adoption agency Mutts and Moms took the dog Ellen had given away to her hair dresser's family back.

But Ellen's dog troubles could run deeper. Radio shock jock Howard Stern said that he heard DeGeneres has dumped nine dogs over the years.

Ok, so its alleged that Ellen is a "serial-dog-dumper."

I'm not sure about the reliability of Howard Stern, or what he has invested by making a statement, but this is going to be very interesting.

Ellen's "crying game" seemed genuine at first. But something kept nagging at me. It just seemed contrived, the more I marinated on the video (see video below).

Is it possible, Ellen could've used the "crying game" as a way of distracting her giving Iggy away? I find it hard to believe as intelligent as Ellen is, that she was unaware of the clause regarding giving the dog away.

Be that as it may, all the facts aren't available. I hope, that she was genuine, and I hope she's not a "serial-dog-dumper." That reminds me of thos women who have babies, and then as the baby gets older, she pops another kid out...cuz she likes the "cuteness of the baby." The novelty wears off as the child gets older.

The truth, will be revealed.

VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican said Saturday it has suspended a monsignor from a senior post at the Holy See after an Italian TV program using a hidden camera recorded him making advances to a young man and asserting that gay sex was not sinful. The Vatican did not identify the monsignor by name. But Monsignor Tommaso Stenico confirmed in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he had been suspended from his post at the Vatican 's Congregation for Clergy, an office which aims to ensure proper conduct by priests.


"Don't condemn me," Stenico said, adding that the program "was done fraudulently" because it used a hidden camera. In the program on private Italian network La7, a man identified as a priest is heard saying that he "didn't feel he was sinning" by having sex with gay men. Rome daily La Repubblica reported Saturday that Vatican officials recognized the monsignor's office in the background of the program, which aired Oct. 1. The Rev. Federico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman, said the Italian monsignor was suspended while the case was under investigation. "Higher-ups are evaluating the situation with the necessary reserve and with the obligatory respect for the person involved, even if this person has erred," Lombardi said. Vatican officials "had to intervene decisively and with the severity required by conduct not compatible with priestly service and with the mission of the Holy See," he added. While the Vatican rarely comments on individual sex scandals, this case directly touched the Holy See, apparently prompting the confirmation of the report. Vatican teaching holds that homosexual activity is a sin. Stenico said to call back later in the day when he would have more to say, but later attempts to reach him were not successful. The Italian news agency ANSA quoted him as saying he had sent his superiors "a dutiful memo" about the case.

The good news is: At least children weren't involved.

The bad news is: The Catholic Church can't seem to quite bounce back from sex scandals.

I applaud the Church for acting swiftly and taking corrective action. They did not attempt to keep it hush-hush, and transfer the monsignor to another church with unwitting parishioners.

So the monsignor doesn't "feel"he was sinning.

It's funny, God is not worried about what "we feel" is sinful or not.

We're expected to read the Word, and believe it, and apply it to our lives.

*sigh* I know, it's easier said than done. But it can be done.

Juanita Bynum's story may read like soap opera, but her travails are a reminder of the longtime magnetism between celebrity Pentecostal preachers and scandal. The 48-year-old regular on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) made her reputation with a sermon renouncing pre-marital sex to search for a holy partner. She appeared to find one in a minister named Thomas Weeks III, wed him in a $1 million on-air ceremony, and together they went out to preach and teach the perfect Christian marriage. Then, in August she accused him of badly beating her in a parking lot (he has been charged, but claims he "walked away" from the confrontation), and said she planned to seek a divorce — and to become the "new face of domestic violence." A dramatic reversal of fortunes, certainly, but hardly the first in her particular corner of Christianity.

Bynum's misfortune coincided with the divorce by an even more popular Pentecostal figure, Paula White, and her co-pastor husband Randy, of the Without Walls International megachurch in Tampa, Fla. Divorce, once a taboo in evangelical culture, is now a fact of life. But the Whites' apparently no-fault parting appeared so matter-of-fact — few details were offered, and neither partner seemed to take a time out from preaching — that some grumbled about the unchristian notion of marriage as a convenience. Then there was the drugs-and-call-boy-abetted exit of marquee-name Pentecostal pastor Ted Haggard from his leadership of the National Association of Evangelicals. Clearly, Pentecostalism is facing testing times.

Some suggest that the risk of high-profile meltdowns may be in the very nature of Pentecostal leadership roles. "There's a lot of soul searching in our movement right now," says J. Lee Grady, editor of Charisma magazine, because of the spectacle of highly successful preachers losing their way. "There's a saying, 'Your anointing can take you to a place where your character cannot sustain you.' I'm hearing that a lot more often these days."

"Anointing" refers to the Pentecostal belief not only in the conversion experience, but in a "second anointing in the Holy Spirit" that bestows such gifts such as speaking in tongues, healing and prophesying. From its emergence in Los Angeles exactly a century ago, it has tended to be exuberant, physical and generally more theologically adventurous than its evangelical cousins. And despite thousands of pastors and churches that pursue their joyous vision without taint, scandal has dogged some of its most prominent figures. Among the best-known were the late 1980s downfalls of televangelists Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart: Bakker, who was undone by charges of fraud, and Swaggart who was caught with a prostitute, had preached a "theology of prosperity" suggesting that there would be divine rewards in this world for those who donated to the ministry.

Some critics, such as Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Convention's Southern Theological Seminary, see the movement as hardwired for scandal. "The Charismatic movement is so driven by emotion and by passion that it sometimes lacks both theological and moral accountability (inserted by Ivent-I agree!)," he says. Others, such as Tim Morgan, an editor at Christianity Today, see it as a more organizational problem — the absence of the kind of internal oversight common in mainline Protestantism and more recently in non-Pentecostal Evangelicalism. "Quite a few of these independent churches feel they are beholden to God alone," says Morgan.

But Anthea Butler, a professor of religion at the University of Rochester in New York believes Pentecostals are no more trouble-prone than other Protestants. "The same sort of thing is happening to Baptists and Presbyterians," she says. "Except for one big thing. They are not media figures." Notes Charisma's Grady: "There's something about someone who is excited about the things of the Holy Spirit that makes them want to get up and proclaim it" — often on TV. "But you'd better have character, or there's going to be a national scandal."
Many supporters and critics of the Pentecostal movement agree that a troubling factor is the recent resurgence of the prosperity theology (known, among other terms, as Word of Faith or neo-Pentecostalism), which introduces a material aspect to worship that could be an inducement to sin. (even the "unsaved" can see that!)

Practitioners of prosperity philosophies of varying intensity include some of the biggest names in Pentecostalism, including the Whites, Joyce Meyer and Creflo Dollar. None of these has had trouble with the law, although in 2006, after years of fencing, Joyce Meyer Ministries came to agreement with local authorities to pay 52% taxes on parts of its headquarters, which the county had maintained were a business. Nonetheless, Hank Hanegraaff, a non-Pentecostal evangelical broadcaster who calls himself the Bible Answer Man, expresses concern "about people out there emptying out their bank accounts so their daughter with leukemia can be healed." He recently read on the air a editorial by Grady denouncing "Celebrity Christianity," which described the case of an unnamed female evangelist whose appearance contract included a five-figure honorarium, a $10,000 fuel deposit for a private plane, a five-star hotel, room-temperature Perrier and two bodyguards. The column ended, "May God help us root out the false apostles ... who are making the American church sick with their.... money-focused heresies." (is J-lo or Diana Ross preaching now?!)

"Where else can you say that you were the church Jezebel," marvels Butler, "and then recast yourself as a pure, holy single woman living a godly life, then all of a sudden you get married in a big elaborate wedding to a bishop, with 40 bridesmaids and then go off and have a ministry with that husband and tell other church couples, 'This is how to love your husband because we got it right'? — and then your husband beats you up in the parking lot, and now you're an advocate for domestic violence?"

Yet Harvard African-American studies and religion scholar Marla Frederick says many of the women with whom Bynum's preaching resonates have seen just as many reversals as in their own lives, and they yearn for a God who will ride the roller coaster with them. "Pentecostal faith is really about the power of the Holy Spirit to instantaneously transform life," she says. But she admits she personally is troubled that "taking a personal story and turning it into a narrative of triumph also becomes something that can be marketed for profit." Indeed, beyond the scandal of the moment, Pentecostalism has produced a culture of superstar preachers whose lives are always at risk of being turned into something close to secular entertainment.

We, the Church, might as well walk around with sunglasses on in order to hide the bruises and black eyes we're getting from the public. As the bible says in Romans 3:23 "...all have sinned and fall short of the glory." That's true, however the trouble arises during willful disobedience. Why does it take a public exposing by God, in order to get people to do right??

I'm willing to wager $5, that every name (not the "christian celebrities" ) were most likely not Christian.
