Roy Scheider, Jaws' Fame, dies at 75

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) -- Roy Scheider, the actor best known for his role as a police chief in the blockbuster movie "Jaws," has died. He was 75.

Roy Scheider speaks at a gala in 2004. Scheider died Sunday at an Arkansas hospital.

Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, hospital spokesman David Robinson said. The hospital did not release a cause of death.

However, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital's Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the past two years.

Scheider received two Oscar nominations, for best-supporting actor in 1971's "The French Connection" in which he played the police partner of Oscar winner Gene Hackman, and for best-actor for 1979's "All That Jazz," the autobiographical Bob Fosse film.

However, he was best known for his role in Steven Spielberg's1975 film, "Jaws," the enduring classic about a killer shark terrorizing beachgoers and well as millions of moviegoers.

Widely hailed as the film that launched the era of the Hollywood blockbuster, it was also the first movie to earn $100 million at the box office. Scheider starred with Richard Dreyfuss, who played an oceanographer.

In 2005, one of Scheider's most famous lines in the movie -- "You're gonna need a bigger boat" -- was voted No. 35 on the American Film Institute's list of best quotes from U.S. movies.

That year, some 30 years after "Jaws" premiered, hundreds of movie buffs flocked to Martha's Vineyard, off the southeastern coast of Massachusetts, to celebrate the great white shark.

The island's JawsFest '05 also brought back some of the cast and crew, including screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel that inspired Spielberg's classic. Spielberg, Scheider and Dreyfuss were absent.

Scheider was also politically active. He participated in rallies protesting U.S. military action in Iraq, including a massive New York demonstration in March 2003 that police said drew 125,000 chanting activists. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend source

Ivent's Favorite Blue-Eyed Brotha Comin' To A Theatre Near You :P

MICHAEL EALY JOINS WILL SMITH MOVIE: Actor to play Smith's brother in drama 'Seven Pounds.' source

*Michael Ealy will follow up his role in Spike Lee's World War II feature "Miracle at St. Anna" with a part in the upcoming Will Smith drama "Seven Pounds."

As previously reported, Smith stars as a suicidal, guilt-ridden IRS agent who attempts to make amends for his past. Things were going along fine until Smith's character falls in love with a woman who pulls him away from his agony.

Rosario Dawson has already been cast as the woman, while Ealy signed on to play Smith's younger brother.

Gabriele Muccino, who directed Smith in "The Pursuit of Happyness," is helming the feature for Columbia Pictures. Woody Harrelson is also among the cast.

Ealy was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance on Showtime's "Sleeper Cell." Lee's "Miracle at St. Anna" is based on the true story of four black WWII soldiers who risk their lives to save an Italian boy while in enemy territory.

Hmmm, Surprised at THESE Statistics?!

Here I am up EARLY IN THE AM blogging-since I went to bed around 7pm w/ a vicious tummy ache!

I'm much better now. Thanks :)

Anyhoo, I wake up at 5:38am with a start and then I froze-I remmy'd about my stomach ache and waited a sec or two to see if the nausea was still in effect.
NOT!
I thank God for healing me, cuz I felt like CRAP!

Of course I jump on the laptop and cruise...I came across an interesting article at
Mes Deux Cents:

Black Women: Violent and Vulgar

Set It Off (1996)/ New Line Cinema

According to The Entman-Rojecki Index of Race and the Media (by Robert M. Entman and Andrew Rojecki, authors of The Black Image in the White Mind)

In the top movies of 1996:

Black female movie characters shown using vulgar profanity: 89%.
White female movie characters shown using vulgar profanity: 17%.

Black female movie characters shown being physically violent: 56%.
White female movie characters shown being physically violent: 11%.

Black female movie characters shown being restrained: 55%.
White female movie characters shown being restrained: 6%.

*****
Considering the fact there are FEW quality parts available to black male actors, let alone female actors, and these women ARE wanting a certain standard of living-yes they will fill those parts.
Julia Roberts has the nerve, authority and cajones to say "bump you and the horse you rode in on, I'm not showing so much as an AREOLA (sp)" and she became the top grossing female actor.
Let Angela Bassett, Queen Latifah "lay down the law" and guess what'll happen?
They'll be labeled as "diva" "difficult" "bi*tch"
Mind you, these women are classy. Even with Q.L. in "Set it Off"-to see her play a role that was so unlike what we've seen of her in movies-I was awestruck!
I thought EVERY actor in that movie did a class A job.
How can you have a movie set 'in the hood' and not have vulgarity, profanity etc, be a part of the movie?
That's inane-the movie would not be plausible!

There aren't even enough movies to showcase NEW black talent-if it weren't for Tyler Perry, lawd knows we'd be up the creek!

If I see ONE MORE PAIRING of Morris Chestnut/Gabrielle Union I'm going to
SmileyCentral.com
Enough Already!
How about the investors greenlight movies of quality & substance for BLACK ACTORS, for a change?
But if they did that, Entman & Rojecki's Index of Race would be on the list of extinction-you know-like quality roles for black actors!

Fam? What do you have to say about the Index of Race...didn't they make "official" what we already "unofficially" knew??
smh

*It's M.M. Monday!*-Saw IV Kills 'Em Over The Weekend! *Graphic Photo*

*Who's Surprised?? This is the most well written, plot-twisting, gut-clenching, keeps you guessing horror movie of all time!*

Moviegoers Feast on Serial (Killer)

source

Los Angeles (E! Online) - Would-be Oscar contenders are flatlining. A writers' strike is looming. On the bright side, serial killers are still money.

The Jigsaw-graced Saw IV topped the weekend box office with $32.1 million, per estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations Sunday. The bow was Hollywood's biggest in more than two months.

Steve Carell, meanwhile, saw a nice but unspectacular debut for his non-serial-killer entry Dan in Real Life (second place, $12.1 million).

The opening was the smallest of Carell's still-young career as a movie star—even the much maligned Evan Almighty, for instance, started off with $31.2 million. But for a fall film in a fall that's been quite unkind to movies about people who don't kill vampires (30 Days of Night), slay zombies (Resident Evil: Extinction), wage a vigilante war on crime (The Brave One) or engage in an Old West gunfight (3:10 to Yuma), the gentle comedy-drama posted the season's biggest debut behind only Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? and The Game Plan.

That said, Dane Cook, who costars as Carell's brother in Dan in Real Life, saw a bigger opening for his much maligned star turn in Good Luck Chuck than Carell and company saw for their better-reviewed film.

Then again, Good Luck Chuck opened bigger, and has made more money to date ($34.8 million), than most of the season's offerings, especially the star-driven Oscar vehicles, à la George Clooney's Michael Clayton (sixth place, $5 million; $28.8 million overall), Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal's Rendition ($2.3 million; $7.7 million overall) and the Ben Affleck-directed Gone Baby Gone (seventh place, $3.9 million; $11.3 million).

The list of A-list fall bombs goes on and on, per Box Office Mojo stats: Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro's Things We Lost in the Fire ($715,000; $2.8 million overall); Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth: The Golden Age ($1.6 million; $14 million overall); and Brad Pitt's The Assassination of Jesse James ($430,000; $2.9 million), the smallest grossing film of its star's career, by a lot, in 14 years.

The fall has been so brutal that not even the magic words Ben Stiller comedy worked on audiences. In its fourth weekend, Stiller's The Heartbreak Kid ($1.8 million; $35.1 million) slipped out of the top 10 and into a coma.

Even the art-house circuit has been hit. Ryan Gosling's Lars and the Real Girl ($952,000, $1.4 million overall) isn't blowing up. Ang Lee's NC-17-rated Lust, Caution ($471,000; $2.8 million overall, per Box Office Mojo) isn't heating up. And Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited ($1.7 million; $6.1 million overall) isn't expanding, even as it moved into wide release for the first time in five weekends.

By comparison, by the time Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums moved onto 600-plus screens back in 2002, the movie, which was also in its fifth weekend, grossed $8.5 million, bringing its overall total to $20.7 million.

Given all the grim stats, it was no surprise that the box office posted its sixth straight down weekend when compared to last year's totals.

And more bad news for Hollywood might be on the way in the form of a midnight Halloween strike by union screenwriters. The good (or bad) news for moviegoers is that there are plenty of movies in the can or in the works should a walkout happen.

Saw IV, for one, tried its grisly best to help out, opening in line with 2006's Saw III ($33.6 million) and 2005's Saw II ($31.7 million).

Eighty-three-old director Sidney Lumet (Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico), meanwhile, showed the youngens how it's done, posting the weekend's best per-screen average for his latest, the heist drama Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, which took in $73,500 from only two theaters.

Here's a rundown of the top 10 films based on Friday-Sunday estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

1. Saw IV, $32.1 million

2. Dan in Real Life, $12.1 million

3. 30 Days of Night, $6.7 million

4. The Game Plan, $6.3 million

5. Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?, $5.7 million

6. Michael Clayton, $5 million

7. Gone Baby Gone, $3.9 million

8. The Comebacks, $3.5 million

9. We Own the Night, $3.4 million

10. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, $3.3 million

If You Don't Stand For Something, You'll Fall For Anything

SACRAMENTO TV STATION APOLOGIZES TO TYLER PERRY: Flood of angry e-mails over Janet interview causes havoc.
source

*Never underestimate the power of Tyler Perry's e-mail nation.
Last week, the filmmaker vented his frustration last week with an interviewer at a Sacramento TV station who kept trying to ask Janet Jackson about her boob flash at the 2004 Super Bowl instead of questions about their new film, "Why Did I Get Married?"

In his latest letter to fans, Perry states: "After you all saw that interview that Janet and I did; you started an email campaign that ended in this man going on air and giving an apology. He got so many emails that it crashed the computer system at the TV station. The other employees couldn't get emails from what I understand."

The original interview with Sacramento's CW31 reporter Mark S. Allen can be seen here.

Allen's subsequent apology can be viewed below:

The stroke of the pen, the click of a mouse, a word from our mouths represents one thing: POWER. We have the power to change lives, move mountains, make a difference.
We're doin it with Jena 6, we did it with Tyler Perry, now let's effect change in ou own lives, and in the lives' of those around us!

It's "M.M. Monday"-Jim Carrey's in a new movie!

"Christmas" comes early for Jim Carrey

source

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter)- Jim Carrey will star in a special effects-heavy adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," which Robert Zemeckis will direct for Walt Disney Pictures.

Carrey will play Scrooge, the ghost of Christmas past, the ghost of Christmas present and the ghost of Christmas future.

Production will incorporate performance capture, and blend live action and computer-generated imagery, building on techniques used for Zemeckis' "The Polar Express" and upcoming "Beowulf," as well as "Monster House," which he executive produced with Steven Spielberg.

Zemeckis wrote the screenplay for the film, which will be made for a 3-D stereoscopic release. A release date has not been set.

Several Web sites have reported that Bob Hoskins -- who worked with Zemeckis on "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" -- might play Mr. Fezziwig in the film, but Disney said no official dealmaking has begun with the British actor.

Carrey's upcoming projects include "Ripley's Believe It or Not," and providing the voice of Horton for the animated film "Horton Hears a Who." His more recent credits include "The Number 23" and "Fun With Dick and Jane."

Did You Ask Justin Timberlake Those Questions, too??

"Why Did I Want To Get Crunk on That Man?!"
source: theybf.com

As is common when a movie is being released, Tyler Perry and Janet Jackson have been their rounds promoting Perry's new movie, "Why Did I Get Married?" One of the shows that interviewed, "Good Day" on Channel 13 in Sacramento(CBS), took several jabs at Janet Jackson. Based on what I've seen of Janet, she's always humble and gracious in interviews, and this interview was no exception. However, Tyler Perry was not having it. This idiot of an interviewer brought up of all things...THE SUPERBOWL FIASCO! That's right you heard me. Everytime the idiot took a jab at Janet, Perry stepped in and protected her. (honey, that's what a man is supposed to do!) There was no relevance of the superbowl to the movie. Now... had he brought up her marriages, I could understand him going there.

My questions are: Did Janet Jackson, uncover her own breast at the Superbowl or did Justin Timberlake??? Why is it that no one has disrespected, joked, ribbed, kidded (or whatever) Justin Timberlake regarding the Superbowl? Who designated J.J. as the scapegoat, sacrificial lamb?

Oh--you don't believe me? Well click for yourself:
watch the madness

Kudos to Mr. Class himself, Tyler Perry!

You better recognize!
