MARION JONES APPEARS VIA SATELLITE ON 'OPRAH ': Track star explains why she lied about steroid use.

*Marion Jones appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Wednesday in her first interview since admitting that she lied about using performance-enhancing drugs throughout her career in track-and-field.

"I want people to understand that, you know, everybody makes mistakes. ... I truly think that a person's character is determined by their admission of their mistakes and then beyond that, what do I do about it?" Jones said via satellite from Austin, Texas, where she lives. "How can I change the lives of people? How can I use my story to change the life of a young person?"

Winfrey asked Jones what she was thinking during her repeated, impassioned denials that took place over the years. "You knew at that time, you knew were lying, right?" Winfrey said.

"I made a mistake. I made the choice, at that time, to protect myself, to protect my family," Jones said. "And now I've paid the consequences dearly."

Jones said she has yet to tell her 4-year-old son, the elder of her two boys, that Mommy's going to jail. She admitted she was disappointed that she was not given a probation-only sentence, as she and her attorneys hoped for.

"I put myself in a position to have somebody else determine my immediate future," she said. "I made that decision. I have to live with it, my family has to live with it. With the grace of God we'll get through it and come out even better at the other end."

Jones has until March 11 to begin her six month jail sentence for lying to investigators about steroid use and a check-fraud scam.

IMO she truly played herself, but I do give it up to her for confessing.
Having said that, while I hate seeing her go to jail, she did break the law.
And I'm a firm believer in, "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."

Mary J to Appear on One Life To Live...

Mary J. Blige to sing on ABC soap opera


NEW YORK - Mary J. Blige is returning to "One Life to Live."

The Grammy-winning singer taped another appearance Thursday on the ABC soap opera. She last visited the fictional town of Llanview in July 2006 to perform hits from her multiplatinum album "The Breakthrough."

For her second cameo, she'll be a surprise guest at a Sweet Sixteen birthday party for Starr Manning (played by Kristen Alderson), ABC said. The episodes are set to air Feb. 15 and Feb. 18.

Accompanied by her band, Blige, 37, will sing "Just Fine," the Grammy-nominated single from her new album, "Growing Pains," as well another track called "Hurt Again."

"It's absolutely amazing to be integrated into a soap opera I've watched since I was a little girl," Blige said in a statement. "I am beyond thrilled to be welcomed back again."

Nelly Furtado, Chris Botti, Erykah Badu, Timbaland and Keri Hilson have also performed on the show. source

Three Largest Black-Owned Bookstores Join Forces

One of the Ngoza Saba principles that I strongly support is Ujamaa (cooperative economics). I've blogged before about the need for each of us to be more focused with our Black spending power. We can correct many of the ills in our community if we simply support Black-owned businesses whenever possible. As such, it is great news to see that AALBC,CushCity, and Mosaic Books the three largest and most established web sites focusing on African American literature joined forces to offer comprehensive online book promotion options to self-published authors and small publishing firms.

Together, the three web sites have over 30 years of combined online presence and over 4 million page views per month. Each site brings different strengths to the venture.

AALBC.com, founded by Troy Johnson of Harlem, N.Y. in 1998, is now the largest website dedicated to promoting books by and about African Americans.

Cushcity.com, co-founded by Willie and Gwen Richardson of Houston, Tex. in 1998, is the world’s largest African American Internet retailer with over 20,000 products online, including books, DVDs, Greek products, calendars and art.

MosaicBooks.com, founded by Ron Kavanaugh of the Bronx, NY, in 1996, was the first site created to showcase African American literature. It recently celebrated its 10th anniversary online.

“This effort brings unprecedented exposure to millions of African American book readers worldwide,” says Johnson. “I am pleased to work with Cushcity and MosaicBooks to bring African American authors and consumers together.”

The three sites will initially offer self-published authors and small presses simultaneous, prominent placement on each of the three sites’ home pages. There are also plans to expand these coordinated services in the future to include e-blasts and other marketing opportunities for authors.

The announcement comes on the heels of recent news reports highlighting the growth in the number of African American titles published annually and the resultant increase in book sales revenue. Based upon book sales figures for 2006 released by the American Association of Publishers, African Americans spend about $1 billion of the estimated $24 billion spent in the U.S. annually on books.

Eddie Murphy and 'Wife' Split After Two Weeks

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comic actor Eddie Murphy and his new wife Tracey Edmonds have split up just two weeks after their romantic wedding in French Polynesia, People magazine reported on Wednesday.

The star of "Shrek" and "Dreamgirls" and Edmonds, a film producer, exchanged their vows on a private island off Bora Bora on Jan. 1.

Under U.S. law, the couple needed a ceremony on U.S. soil to make the marriage legal.

But Murphy, 46, and Edmonds, 40, told People in a statement they would not do that and had decided to remain friends.

"After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further," the statement said.

"While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends," it added.

Murphy, 46, was divorced from his wife of 13 years, Nicole, in 2006. They had five children together. Last year, he fathered a daughter with Melanie Brown of the Spice Girls, but did not acknowledge paternity until four months after the baby was born.

Edmonds split last year with her husband, R&B singer/songwriter Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. They had two sons together.

BYNUM & WEEKS MEET IN COURTROOM: Televangelist Juanita Bynum and her estranged husband meet behind locked courtroom.


Bishop Weeks and his estranged wife Evangelist Juanita Bynum meet behind a locked courtroom door, along with a group of attorneys.

They met for over five hours, according to a report from an article in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution January 11th issue.

After the meeting they slipped out a back door. No one involved in the meeting would discuss details.

The meeting was supposed to be a discussion on whether Bishop Thomas W. Weeks III, would agree to plead guilty in Fulton County Superior Court to felony charges for allegedly eating, stomping, choking and threatening to kill Bynum at an Atlanta hotel parking lot on August 21st.

The couple's divorce is pending in Gwinnett County Superior Court.

Archbishop Earl Paulk expected to turn himself in
(p.s. as of 10am today, he still had not turned himself in)

Archbishop Earl Paulk, one of Atlanta's preeminent religious figures through the 1980s and 1990s, was supposed to turn himself in to Cobb County today on a perjury charge, but had not as of this afternoon.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued the warrant Monday. Paulk is charged with lying during a deposition in a sexual misconduct lawsuit. Paulk said Mona Brewer, the woman suing him, was the only sexual partner he had outside of his marriage.

The deposition in the case was taken in Cobb County, which is why the warrant was issued there.

John Bankhead, a GBI spokesman, said at 1:45 p.m. that Paulk was supposed to turn himself in at 10 a.m., but he had not shown up.

Nancy Bodiford, a spokeswoman for the Cobb County Sheriff's Office, said Paulk had an agreement to turn himself in within 48 hours after the warrant was issued about noon Monday.

Paulk could walk in at any time of day or night, she said. "When he and his attorney are coming in, I don't know," she said.

Paulk's criminal attorney did not return calls.

The perjury investigation began last summer after a DNA test showed Paulk fathered a son with his sister-in-law.

That son, the Rev. D.E. Paulk, now pastors the Cathedral at Chapel Hill in Decatur, the church in which Archbishop Paulk built his reputation.

Brandi Paulk, D.E.'s wife and a minister at the church, said the family had no comment about the arrest.

"We were caught off guard," by the warrant, she said.

"The news knew about it before our attorneys did. We are still in the process of sorting it out."

Archbishop Paulk built an interracial mega-church and a TV ministry in Decatur that attracted national attention and more than 10,000 members.

He also started an association of independent charismatic churches that had member churches across the nation.

His career has been plagued with rumors and charges of sexual indiscretions.

Mona and Bobby Brewer, former staff members at the church, sued Paulk in 2005. They dropped the suit last year for legal strategic reasons, and each filed their own suit against him and the church weeks later.

Ga. Church Leader Accused of Perjury

ATLANTA — An 80-year-old leader of a suburban megachurch who is at the center of a sex scandal has been charged with lying under oath for saying he had sex outside marriage with only one other woman, court documents show.

A warrant for the arrest of Archbishop Earl Paulk, co-founder of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit at Chapel Hill Harvester Church, was issued Monday, according to court documents. Paulk was making arrangements Monday night to turn himself in, WAGA-TV reported.

Former church employee Mona Brewer is suing Paulk, his brother and the church on allegations that Paulk manipulated her into an affair from 1989 to 2003 by telling her it was her only path to salvation. In a 2006 deposition stemming from the lawsuit, the archbishop said under oath that the only woman he had ever had sex with outside of his marriage was Brewer.

But the results of a court-ordered paternity test revealed in October that Paulk is the biological father of his brother's son, D.E. Paulk, who is now head pastor at the church. As part of Brewer's lawsuit, eight women have given sworn depositions that they were coerced into sexual relationships with Earl Paulk.

A judge ordered the paternity test at the request of the Cobb County district attorney's office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. District Attorney Pat Head declined to comment when reached at his home Monday night.

Paulk and his brother, Don, have been hit with lawsuits from former members alleging they were coerced into sexual affairs, but this is the first time criminal charges have been filed against the archbishop.

A tentative trial date in the criminal case has been set for the second week in March.

On Friday, the bishop, his divorce and criminal lawyers and Bynum met behind closed doors with a Fulton County Superior Court judge for several hours, said court officials. "The defense had indicated that [Weeks] was open to trying to dispose of this case without a trial," Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said through a spokesperson. "The judge called the parties together to see if that was possible, but those efforts failed. Now the case is set for trial." Randy Kessler, Weeks' divorce attorney who attended the meeting, refused to comment on what was discussed about the criminal case. "No plea was entered," Kessler said. "It was a scheduling conference to schedule the criminal process." Weeks has been charged with felony aggravated assault, felony terroristic threats and two counts of simple battery in connection with the alleged Aug. 21 attack against Bynum. He has repeatedly denied the spousal abuse. The couple's divorce is still pending in Gwinnett County Superior Court. It is scheduled for both mediation and deposition on Feb. 18.

Meanwhile, Weeks, an author and leader of a global ministry, and Bynum, a Pentecostal pastor, author and gold-selling gospel singer, are planning separate seminars on family issues next month. Weeks' "Renaissance for Domestic Wholeness" is scheduled for Feb. 14-16 at Global Destiny Church in Duluth. Bynum has said that she would host a domestic violence awareness conference in February. No information was available on the conference,

Mary J. Blige has slammed reports linking her to a steroid investigation, insisting she has never taken the performance-enhancing drug.

The Grammy award-winning star, 50 Cent, Timbaland, Wyclef Jean and actor Tyler Perry have all been accused of ordering steroids or human growth hormone from doctors and pharmacists.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares named the celebrities who featured in his investigation on Sunday.

But Blige vehemently denies any involvement.

The singer's spokeswoman Karynne Tencer tells the New York Daily News, "Mary J. Blige has never taken any performance-enhancing illegal steroids."

Authorities have uncovered no evidence the celebrities violated any drug laws.

JAN ADAMS FEELS VINDICATED BY CORONER'S REPORT: Plastic surgeon who operated on Donda West releases statement.

*Doctor Jan Adams, the plastic surgeon who performed surgery on Donda West a day before her death in November, has released a statement claiming to be cleared of involvement in her passing.

As previously reported, the Los Angeles coroner said in a statement Thursday that West's cause of death was inconclusive.

"The final manner of death could not be determined. Multiple post-operative factors could have played a role in the death. The exact contribution of each factor could not be determined. There was no evidence of a surgical or anesthetic misadventure."

In response, Adams released a statement claiming vindication from the report.

"The coroner's report confirms what we have always believed," Adams said in the statement. "I hold sacred the bond of confidentiality that exists between a patient and doctor according to the law. Our deepest sympathies continue with the West family and we stand behind our decision to support them during these difficult times."

He adds, "Until further discussions with the West family, we have no additional comment."

West, the 58 mother of rapper Kanye West, died on Nov. 10 at Centinela Freeman hospital after friends and family made a frantic 911 call for help from her home in Playa Del Ray.

For weeks, Dr. Adams has denied that any negligence on his part led to Dr. West's death.

Cops: Man Sodomizes Stepson in Revenge

FORT WORTH, Texas - A father sodomized his 18-year-old stepson to avenge the teenager's alleged rape of the man's 8-year-old daughter, police said.

The father, 32, turned himself into to authorities on Friday and was released from jail Saturday after posting a $17,500 bond. He faces a charge of aggravated sexual assault.

The stepson was arrested Jan. 2 and charged with suspicion of aggravated sexual assault. Police say the father caught him assaulting his daughter, and a subsequent examination at a hospital revealed the girl had been sodomized.

Sgt. Cheryl Johnson, supervisor of the Fort Worth sex crimes unit, said in a story posted Saturday on the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Web site that people need to "allow the criminal justice system to work for them."

"This is a very unique case, but we have a criminal justice system in place, and no one can take the law into their own hands," Johnson said.

The Star-Telegram didn't identify the father or the stepson to protect the identity of the girl. Fort Worth police didn't immediately return phone and e-mail messages from The Associated Press.

When the stepson was arrested, the man warned his wife not to get the teenager out of jail. She posted bond for the teen's release. When he called home Jan. 3 after getting released, the father took the call and picked him up, police said.

Instead of taking the teenager home, the Arlington man drove to an abandoned house in Fort Worth, beat his stepson with a baseball bat and sodomized him with a metal tool, police said.

After the man left, the stepson found a pay phone and called police, who searched the abandoned home.

"We did find evidence at the scene to corroborate our victim's story," Johnson said.

Janet "Damita Jo" Jackson's "Feedback" Video

I used to be a former DIE HARD Janet Jackson fan (i've since realized, it was idolatrous). Fan or not-her vids were usually HOT...but I think Feedback's vid is a NOT. Judge for urself.

I like Janet's song "Feedback," cuz it's smooth and ez to sing to.

However, I'm disappointed with Feedback's video. There's no story line--just folks sitting atop of planets.
I couldn't wait for the dance sequence.
She didn't disappoint-there was one.
It wasn't the best dance sequence-but there was one.
My theory is, this song was an unexpected hit and they rushed 2 put a vid
together.
It's not the Janet I know, but hopefulluy the videos get better from now on.
I just hope she appreciates THIS FEEDBACK.
