Deputy Dumps Disabled Guy Out of Wheelchair...

TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- A sheriff's deputy who was videotaped dumping a paralyzed man from a wheelchair onto a jailhouse floor has been charged with abuse of a disabled person, a sheriff's official said.

(Deputy Charlett Marshall-Jones, pic b'low)

Brian Sterner, 32, has not been able to walk since a 1994 wrestling accident.

Hillsborough County Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, turned herself in and was booked into the Orient Road Jail early Saturday, jail records show.

She was charged with one count of felony abuse of a disabled person and released after posting $3,500 bail.

Surveillance footage from January 29 shows Marshall-Jones dumping Brian Sterner out of his wheelchair and searching him on the floor after he was brought in on a warrant for a traffic violation.

Sterner, 32, said when he was taken into a booking room and told to stand up, the deputy grew agitated when he told her that he could not. Video Watch what happened on tape »

Marshall-Jones was suspended without pay, and three other deputies were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

If convicted, she could be sent to prison for five years.

An attorney for Marshall-Jones listed in jail records did not immediately return a phone message.

Marshall-Jones also could not be reached by phone for comment Friday night. A telephone number listed in her name has been disconnected.

Sterner, who can drive a car but has not been able to walk since a 1994 wrestling accident, was arrested at his Riverview home and taken to the Orient Road Jail on a charge of fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, according to records.

He had called for charges to be filed against Marshall-Jones.source

I honestly believe there's more to this story.
Anyone who's familiar with my postings know if it's right, I'll say it's right-and if it's wrong, I'll say it's wrong (even if everyone says it's right).
Something's just not clean in this milk.
Now when I 1st read the story, I thought the article had a typo when it said "she" was going to turn herself in. #1,
I couldn't tell that was a a female deputy in the video- I was sure a man had done this-ONLY BCUZ the act was so aggressive, and the person in the wheelchair was male.

Now, Sterner is no saint...he was charged with fleeing and eluding and even had a warrant issued for his arrest-so it's not as if this is his 1st encounter with the law, but I'm wondering...did he mouth off, get smart, talk mess-as people at police stations are known to do?
Now-I'm not excusing Deputy Marshall's actions AT ALL. But I find it hard to believe that she would just turn over a chair w/out provocation. It is possible for her to-I mean i don't know her, never heard of her prior to this story...but I just can't get feeling to go away-there's more to the story.

Having said that...she should've walked away, and let someone else deal with Sterner. He was defenseless. The man was/is in a WHEELCHAIR...which meant he COULDN'T stand up.
smh
If you look at his limbs, atrophy is def apparent.
Was she blinded by anger to take notice that he was indeed telling the truth...probably.
I was able to tell in the video (looking at the positioning of his limbs) that he hadn't used his limbs in a while.
It causes you to flinch when you see how hard he hit that foor, and the deputies just continue with their duties. What was also hard to watch was a deputy (male) who walks towards the camera and is obviously smiling.
Because there's no audio-so his smiling looks cruel. Could his smile be that of "I guess she (Marshall-Jones) showed you (Sterner)."
or
"I'm glad that's not me..."
who knows?
One thing, no two things I noticed:
I haven't heard of this officer having had disciplinary action taken against her in the past for violent offenses against civilians (this happened Jan. 29th) more than enuf time to dig something up
AND
she and others involved were suspended without pay.
I HAVE HEARD OF MORE HEINOUS CRIMES and the suspects received suspension w/pay (read-vacation) until the investigation has concluded.
It takes one lapse in judgment to change your life forever.
She should've walked away, counted to 10, called a supervisor-something.
No matter what she does from now on...she'll always be associated with letting her anger getting the best of her and tossing Sterner to the floor.
*sigh*
Also...if ONE co-worker would've stepped up, who knows how this could've turned out?
Now bcuz guilty by assoc., accessory-whatever-her homies are going to feel the crunch in their pockets too. Was it worth it?
Of course not.
Ok...that's all I'm going to say on that topic.
This story is just sad all the way around.

This Verdict Was a No-Brainer...

(CNN) -- A jury in Canton, Ohio, found former police officer Bobby Cutts Jr. guilty of murdering his pregnant girlfriend, Jessie Marie Davis, and their unborn child.
art.tears.jpg

Grasping tissues and moaning, Bobby Cutts Jr. testitfied he never meant to hurt girlfriend Jessie Davis.

pics from trial

The jury of six men and six women reached the verdict after more than 21 hours of deliberations.

Jurors found Cutts guilty of aggravated murder for the unlawful termination of Davis' pregnancy and the aggravated murder of a child under the age of 13.

But the jury found him guilty of a lesser murder count in the death of Davis.

Davis was nine months pregnant when she disappeared. She had chosen the name Chloe for her daughter.

Jurors found that baby Chloe was killed during the commission of another crime, making Cutts eligible for the death penalty.

The penalty phase of the trial is set to begin February 25. Cutts will face a sentence of either 25 years to life with the possibility of parole, 30 years to life with the possibility of parole, life without parole or death.

As the verdicts were read, Cutts remained stoic, a stark contrast to his tearful testimony on Monday. watch the verdicts

His and Davis' families left the courthouse without comment.

Jurors began deliberations late Tuesday afternoon. They had been sequestered, spending nights at a nearby hotel, cut off from exposure to the media and other potential influences.

According to testimony, Cutts, 30, rolled Davis' body in a comforter and dumped it in a park, leaving their 2½-year-old son, Blake, alone.

Cutts also was found guilty of aggravated burglary, two counts of gross abuse of a corpse and endangering a child, Blake.

Cutts sobbed on the witness stand as he admitted killing Davis and their unborn child. But Cutts insisted that their deaths were an accident.

"I didn't mean to hurt her," Cutts testified, clasping a handful of tissues. "This isn't real," he said he kept telling himself.

Prosecutors discounted Cutts' story, claiming he buckled under the financial pressure of child support, killed the mother of his child and then created a cover story to try to get away with it.

On the stand, Cutts said he went to pick up his son Blake and became agitated when Davis, 26, wasn't moving fast enough to get the boy ready. He said he tried to leave her house but she grabbed him to keep him from leaving, and he accidentally elbowed her in the throat.

Cutts told the jury he performed CPR on Davis and then tried to revive her with bleach. When he realized Davis was dead, Cutts said he panicked and put her in the back of his truck, so Blake wouldn't have to see his mother.

Myisha Ferrell, Cutts' longtime friend, testified for the prosecution that Cutts appeared at her home at 6 a.m. after Davis died.

She said she could tell he was distraught. When they left her home in his truck, she found out why.

"We drove off and he said something was wrong," she said. "He said, 'Something bad.' "

"He said something was wrong with his baby's mother."

Ferrell told the jury Cutts started speaking erratically as they drove, then blurted out, "She's in the back."

Ferrell admitted she helped dump Davis' body in a field and said Cutts later coached her on what to say to police.

Ferrell was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to lying to authorities and complicity to gross abuse of a corpse.

During closing arguments, prosecutor Dennis Barr said Cutts strangled and killed Davis and her unborn child because of his mounting debt and child support for what would have been his fourth child.

Cutts' own actions following Davis' disappearance were a clear indications of his guilt, he said.

"His reaction is the reaction of person who committed a crime and is trying to cover it up," Barr said.

Davis disappeared in June and the search for her attracted national attention. At that time, Cutts repeatedly denied he had any involvement. But Cutts eventually led police to her body.

"For nine days he kept the location of [Davis' body] a secret and went on about his life, every day knowing that Jessie and Chloe were laying there rotting away, destroying the evidence," Barr said.

Prosecutors also reminded the jury of the testimony of one of Cutts' friends, Richard Mitchell, who claimed the former police officer threatened to kill Davis one month before she disappeared.

"I'm going to kill that [expletive] and throw her in the woods," Mitchell quoted Cutts as saying.

In their closings, Cutts' attorneys acknowledged their client's poor judgment after Davis' death, but said the prosecution had not presented any witnesses to support their claim that Cutts was in financial distress.

They urged the jury to find Cutts not guilty on the basis that the prosecution did not prove their case that he intentionally killed Davis.

Fernando Mack, a defense lawyer, admitted Cutts' judgment lapsed when he wrapped Davis' body up and went to dispose of it, leaving their toddler alone with the bleach-soaked rug.
advertisement

But he cautioned jurors against deciding Cutts' fate based on an emotional response to ugly facts. "Will it outrage you? Absolutely. But, Blake being left home alone doesn't tell you about aggravated murder."

"You don't know what happened in that house," defense attorney Carolyn Ranke said

There was sooo much info on this story-it was impossible to post all of it.
He buckled under child support pressure, but he refused to take measures to guard against pregnancy, namely not committing adultery.
He was definitely a psychopath, considering how he treated his 9 yr old daughter...glad he's off the streets.

but it was his son's' words ...mommy's in the rug

A Story That Warms The Heart...

Easing The Burden...

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Mothers cradle children in their arms. Fathers smile softly at the helpless bodies they hold. Other parents are bent over from the weight of their teenage kids whose legs fall limp, almost touching the ground. In the absence of basic medical equipment, these parents do this every day.

The wheelchair distribution was the vision of Brad Blauser, center.

An Iraqi boy gives a thumbs up after receiving his wheelchair. Brad Blauser, center, created the program.(above)

Mariam, 7, suffers from polio, as do both of her siblings. Here, U.S. military members help her with her new chair. (above)

Khaled is a father of three. On this day, his young daughter, Mariam, is getting fitted for her new wheelchair. Her arms and legs are painfully thin, little more than skin and bone. She's 7 years old, but looks barely half that. She and both her siblings, a sister and brother, suffer from varying degrees of polio. None of them can walk.

Asked how he and his family cope, Khaled chokes up, fighting back tears.

"I am sick of life -- what can I say to you?" he says after a long pause.

One man, Brad Blauser, has vowed to try to make life a little easier for these families by organizing the distribution of wheelchairs, donated and paid for by his charity, Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids. He first came to Iraq in 2004 as a civilian contractor. Struck by the abject chaos surrounding him and seeing helpless children scooting along the ground, he pledged to find a way to help. Video Watch dads, moms carry kids; tears flow when wheelchairs arrive »

His first step was to consult an Army medic to find out what hospitals really needed. "He surprised me with his answer about pediatric wheelchairs. We've got so many children out in the city that the ones who can get around are following their friends by dragging themselves around on the ground, which is heartbreaking to see," he says.

"I was surprised. It took me aback."

Enlisting the help of generous supporters and an Iraqi humanitarian group, "Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids" was born in August of 2005. Thirty days later, its first 31 chairs were delivered. To date, more than 250 Iraqi families have received the wheelchairs.

Blauser has partnered with a nonprofit group called Reach Out and Care Wheels, which sells him the chairs at a manufacturing price of about $300.

The chairs are made by prisoners at the South Dakota State Penitentiary and ultimately delivered in Iraq by the U.S. military.

"Getting these prisoners involved, it just means the world to them," said Andrew Babcock, the executive director of Reach Out and Care Wheels. "Even the prisoners, I've been there and visited, and they're so excited. They come up with different design ideas and ways to make things better for the kids. They want to know where the chairs are going and what kids we're helping."

Blauser said it's unbelievable to be there when the chairs are delivered.

"The most affecting thing about this whole wheelchairs for children is when the parents realize the gift that is being given to their children and they reach out to hug you." he said. "The tears are running from their eyes and they say, 'We never thought that you could do this.' "

Blauser is helped on the Iraqi missions by the civil affairs division of the U.S. military, which helps organize the safe transport of the families to the distribution point and adjustment of the wheelchairs to fit each child.

He said it gives "the troops something when they go home, something good to remember where they know they have contributed, they know they have done a good thing."

Army Sgt. 1st Class Jason Jurack agrees. "It brings a smile to your face. It really gives a different image to the Army as a whole -- helping people out, putting a smile on local nationals' faces, little kids that need our help."

It's a sentiment that is echoed by Samira Al-Ali, the head of the Iraqi group that finds the children in need. On this day, she tells the soldiers she hopes that this humanitarian act will give them a different image of Iraq, not one of a gun and war, she says. Her words are simple but effective.

"I wish the world would see with their own eyes the children of Iraq and help the children of Iraq, because the children of Iraq have been deprived of everything," she said. "Even a normal child has been deprived of their childhood; a disabled child and their family is dealing with so much more."

The children also show gratitude, even those who can scarcely move. Blauser remembers one boy's father who dressed him in a three-piece suit, with the trousers hanging off his motionless legs.

"He couldn't move his legs or his arms. But when we sat him in his chair, he gave us the thumbs up."

Iraqi parents will go to any lengths to improve the quality of their children's lives. Blauser points to one of his favorite photographs, of a father carrying his son in his arms, an endless desert road behind him. He had carried his son more than 6 miles to get a wheelchair.

"In August 2006 we had a distribution in northern Iraq," Blauser remembered. "We watched him [the father] come forward, and people rushed to take the boy from his arms. And he said, 'No, I've been carrying this child all my life. I can carry him the last 100 yards to receive his wheelchair.

I needed to post this story, not only to give Brad Blauser props but also to remind myself of how blessed I am when I think otherwise.
I can't imagine literally carrying around my teenage child who's dead weight.
I can't imagine the burning/numbing sensations that are experienced as i walk with child in my arms SIX MILES to get to a wheelchair.
Strength? Perseverence? Tenacity?
Americans (even with our issues) have not a clue.
Yes, we have experienced adversities, and tragedies...but could we endure on a daily basis
for example, this article?
There are parents taking care of disable children in America everyday.
Imagine having to pick up your 13 yr old child and CARRYING him to the store.
or carrying your 8yr old to the dr, in your arms!
I needed this article-to remind me of how it could've been.
*sigh*
thank you, Lord.

Ironically, Northern Illinois Shooter's Interests were Peace & Social Justice...huh?

DEKALB, Illinois (CNN) -- Northern Illinois University on Friday identified the man who fatally shot five people in a classroom as Steven P. Kazmierczak, whom police described as an award-winning student "revered" by colleagues and faculty.

(shooter, Steven P. Kazmierczak)
***

Students and faculty described Steven P. Kazmierczak as "a fairly normal, unstressed person," police say.

Kazmierczak, 27, who police said shot 21 people before shooting and killing himself, was an award-winning sociology student and a leader of a campus criminal justice group, according to school Web sites.

Concealing a shotgun in a guitar case, and tucking three other guns under his coat, Kazmierczak walked into a geology class in an NIU lecture hall Thursday afternoon and began firing, police said. The graduate student stopped to reload his shotgun before he took his own life, police said.

Kazmierczak was a student about 175 miles away at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, police said, and there "were no red flags" warning of any violent behavior.

One of Kazmierczak's advisers said that she enjoyed having him as a student and that he was "a nice person; he was a nice kid."

"I found Steven to be a very committed student, extremely respectful of me as an instructor and adviser," said Jan Carter-Black, an assistant professor in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's School of Social Work. Video Watch student reaction to shooting aftermath »

Carter-Black was assigned to be Kazmierczak's faculty adviser when he enrolled in the school in the summer of 2007, and he was a student in her human behavior and social environment class last fall, she said.

Carter-Black and Chris Larrison -- another School of Social Work associate professor who knew Kazmierczak -- described the gunman as pleasant, considerate and flexible.

"I was so surprised to see this today," Larrison said. Kazmierczak worked on a research project concerning mental health clinics under him, he said.

"It doesn't fit with the Steven" he knew, Larrison said.

The 27-year-old participated fully in the class -- which met for three hours once a week -- until he formally withdrew from it sometime before late September and became a part-time student, Carter-Black said.

He was lightening his course load so he could take on a position in the prison system, she said.

She didn't know if the position was in the federal or state system, but said he had discussed the decision with several faculty members. He later left the position at the prison, she said, but she didn't know under what circumstances.

"He was very committed to pursuing a career with prisoners," Larrison said. He said it was likely that the career interest corresponded with Kazmierczak's concentration in mental health.

Carter-Black and Larrison said Kazmierczak resumed full-time status this semester.

In 2006, Kazmierczak was a student at Northern Illinois, police said, where he worked on a graduate paper that described his interest in "corrections, political violence, and peace and social justice."

The paper said Kazmierczak was "co-authoring a manuscript on the role of religion in the formation of early prisons in the United States."

University police Chief Donald Grady said Kazmierczak "was an awarded student. He was someone that was revered by the faculty and staff and students alike."

Fellow students and faculty described Kazmierczak as "a fairly normal, unstressed person," Grady said.

People close to Kazmierczak said he was taking medication but had recently stopped, "and he had become somewhat erratic in the last couple of weeks," Grady said.

Police have found no notes that would explain the attack, and authorities have no known motive in the case, Grady said.

Kazmierczak's former landlord, Jim Gordon, said Kazmierczak moved out of DeKalb in June 2007 and left a forwarding address in Champaign.

Gordon said he didn't recognize the picture of his yearlong former tenant "at all," but his records indicated that Kazmierczak "always paid on time, never a noise problem, left the place spotless."

The university sociology department's Web site said he was the recipient of a dean's award for his graduate work in sociology in 2006. He had been accepted for the graduate program that fall, the Web site said.

Kazmierczak also was vice president of the university's Academic Criminal Justice Association, according to the group's Web site, and worked on a paper on self-injury in prisons with the group's current president.

Kazmierczak's paper, titled "Self Injury in Correctional Settings: 'Pathology' of Prisons or Prisoners?" was published in 2006, according to the university's sociology Web site.

The Academic Criminal Justice Association provides "NIU students and members of the DeKalb community with an opportunity to learn about and promote knowledge and understanding of all areas of the criminal justice system, especially corrections and juvenile justice," the Web site says. Photo See photos of the victims and shooting aftermath »

DeKalb police asked the Polk County, Florida, Sheriff's Department to make "next of kin" death notification to Kazmierczak's father, Robert Kazmierczak, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said Friday.

"Please leave me alone. I have no statement to make," Robert Kazmierczak told CNN affiliate WESH from the porch of his Lakeland, Florida, home.

"It's a very hard time. I'm a diabetic," he said before breaking down in tears.
Watch the father react to the media »

Kazmierczak had no arrest record and no known history of mental illness, and he had a valid state-required firearm ID card, so he had no problem buying the guns, one law enforcement source said.

Police said the only record of him in DeKalb County Circuit Court was a speeding ticket issued in December 2006. A police officer cited him amid snowy conditions for "failure to reduce speed -- resulting in an -- accident," in a white 2001 Honda. Kazmierczak was 6-foot-4 and 165 pounds, according to the record.

Kazmierczak pleaded guilty and paid a $75 fine. No one was injured in the accident, the record showed.

The Hilton Children Are So Well Rounded And Adjusted-what's their parents' secret??

Baby Hilton, Now Has Street Cred
(after being jailed for one night-now he can make a rap song!)

Hilton has checked out.

After spending the better part of the day behind bars since being booked on suspicion of driving under the influence Tuesday morning, Barron Hilton posted $20,000 bail at around 5:45 p.m.

(B-arron, doesn't look happy-noooo noooo nooo)
(He gets it from his sisterrrr)

A trio of friends put up the amount through a bail bondsman after the Hilton family appeared content to let him spend the night in jail, as reported earlier by E! Online senior editor Marc Malkin.

Hilton exited the station through a rear door, jacket over his head, and hopped into a silver SUV with two guys and a woman inside, none family members.

Sources close to Paris Hilton confirm that Barron phoned her earlier Tuesday asking for help, but, at the urging of her parents, she declined to post bail for him.

"It broke her heart, but she did what her parents thought was best," the insider tells E! Online.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Officer Steve Whitmore said Barron Hilton's bail was upped to $20,000 from the previous $5,000 because he is now facing a felony charge of possessing a forged California driver's license in addition to misdemeanor DUI.

The third of Kathy and Rick Hilton's four offspring has been ordered to appear Apr. 14 at the Malibu courthouse.

And Barron Hilton's rap sheet could get meatier still if charges are filed in connection to the smashup the hotel heir was involved in shortly before his arrest.

Not long before Paris Hilton's 18-year-old brother was arrested, witnesses saw his black Mercedes E350—with an unidentified woman at the wheel—sideswipe a grey Ford Ranger pickup truck on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and continue on its merry way.

The other vehicle's presumably peeved driver followed Hilton, who at some point returned to the driver's seat, and his cruising partner to a gas station on PCH, where authorities eventually caught up with them—although not before, according to eyewitness accounts, Hilton had a run-in with a station employee's leg.

Per the L.A. County Sheriff's report summing up Hilton's arrest at 8:05 a.m. for alleged DUI, the California Highway Patrol was investigating a possible collision that occurred while the unnamed woman was driving.

CHP Public Information Officer Leon Hines said the Mercedes bumped into the Ford at 6:10 a.m. while heading north on PCH just above Sunset Boulevard.

The driver of the Ford continued to follow the Mercedes to Coral Canyon at PCH, and that's where CHP responded to the call and began the preliminary collision report, Hines said. Neither of the drivers involved appeared to be under the influence.

As for the man whose leg got in the way of Hilton's car, he told the New York Post and TMZ that, after the impact knocked him over, leaving him with some bruises, two men jumped out of a Ford with a dented left side and grabbed the keys out of the Mercedes to prevent the car's occupants from driving away again.

The driver of the truck had called the police en route to the gas station, and he had Hilton wait it out on a bus bench until authorities arrived.

Hilton, who blew a 0.14 percent on a Breathalyzer test and was found to be carrying the fake ID, was booked into custody at the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station at 8:35 a.m. source

I Will Never Ever Understand Why Kids Undertake Stupid Behaviors Such as this...smh

CDC: 82 kids dead from 'choking game'

At least 82 youths have died from the so-called "choking game," according to the first government count of fatalities from the tragic fad.

In the game, children use dog leashes, bungee cords wrapped around their necks or other means to temporarily cut blood flow to their head. The goal is a dreamlike, floating-in-space feeling when blood rushes back into the brain.

As many as 20 percent of teens and preteens play the game, sometimes in groups, according to some estimates based on a few local studies. But nearly all the deaths were youths who played alone, according to the count complied by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC started the research after receiving a letter last year from a Tacoma, Wash., physician who said her 13-year-old son died from playing the game in 2005.

"At the time I had never heard of this," said Dr. Patricia Russell, whose son was found hanging in his closet, but later learned he had talked to a friend about it.

The CDC counted reports from media and advocacy organizations in the years 1995 through 2007, totaling 82 fatalities of children ages 6 to 19. They did not include deaths in which it was unclear if the death was from the choking game or if it was a suicide. They also did not include deaths that involved autoerotic asphyxiation, which is self-strangulation during masturbation and is said to be mainly done by adult males.

The 82 deaths were spread across the country. Nearly 90 percent were boys, at an average age of about 13, the CDC found.

The report is being published this week in a CDC publication, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

CDC officials urged parents to be aware the fad exists, and to watch for possible warning signs like bloodshot eyes, marks on the neck, frequent and severe headaches, disorientation after spending time alone, and ropes, scarves or belts tied to bedroom furniture or doorknobs or found knotted on the floor.

The authors acknowledged that 82 is probably an undercount. They could not rely on death certificates, which do not differentiate choking-game deaths from other unintentional strangulation deaths. Instead, they relied mainly on a news database that is large but doesn't include all media outlets.

It's likely that there are about 100 U.S. choking game deaths each year, said Dr. Tom Andrew, New Hampshire's chief medical examiner, who has been studying the phenomenon for several years.

Andrew said many coroners and medical examiners likely label the deaths as suicides because they don't have the time or resources to interview a victim's friends and look for alternate explanations.

Many of the children who died form the choking game were described as bright, athletic students who apparently were intrigued by a method of getting high that doesn't involve drugs or alcohol, he said.

Big Pimpin' Papa Knowles Says, Oh No She (Aretha) Didn't! {not really, but I know he felt like saying it!}

Beyonce's Dad Weighs in on 'Queen' Flap

NEW YORK — Beyonce's father says Aretha Franklin's criticism of his daughter for referring to Tina Turner as "the Queen" at the Grammys is "ridiculous."

On Tuesday, the Queen of Soul let everyone know her royal feathers were ruffled when Beyonce called Turner "The Queen" before their joint performance Sunday at the Grammys. Franklin, who also performed at the ceremony, was sitting in the audience: Beyonce did reference her along with other top female singers before introducing Turner.

"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

However, in an interview with CelebTV.com posted Wednesday, Matthew Knowles, Beyonce's father and manager, said: "I am not taking something this ridiculous to Beyonce. Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as a 'queen.' Not queen of gospel, queen of soul, queen of blues,

Queen of England. I consider my wife a queen and sometimes call her that. Does Aretha have a problem with that?"

Beyonce's representative did not respond to a request from The Associated Press seeking comment.

An e-mail request for comment from Franklin's representative was not immediately returned. However, in her statement on Tuesday, Franklin made clear she wasn't holding a grudge toward Beyonce, ending her statement by giving the Grammys thanks and "love to Beyonce anyway."

Here We Go Again...Shooter Shoots Others, Then Self...sigh

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE:

A sixth person shot by a gunman at Northern Illinois University has died, the coroner's office tells CNN.

Gunman kills 5, then self at Northern Illinois University

DEKALB, Ill. — A former student dressed in black opened fire with a shotgun and two handguns from the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, killing five students and injuring 16 others before committing suicide, authorities said.

The gunman fatally shot four women and a man in a "brief, rapid-fire assault" that sent terrified students running for cover, university President John Peters said. Four died at the scene, including the gunman, and the other two died at a hospital, he said.

Students are consoled outside Cole Hall at Northern Illinois University after a shooting on campus Thursday.

Witnesses in the geology class said "someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun," Peters said.

Lauren Carr said she was sitting in the third row of the lecture hall around 3 p.m. when she saw the shooter walk through a door on the right-hand side of the stage, pointing a gun straight ahead.

"I personally Army-crawled halfway up the aisle," said Carr, a 20-year-old sophomore. "I said I could get up and run or I could die here."

She said a student in front of her was bleeding, "but he just kept running."

"I heard this girl scream, 'Run, he's reloading the gun.'"

Student Jerry Santoni was in a back row when he saw the gunman enter a service door to the stage.

"I saw him shoot one round at the teacher," he said. "After that, I proceeded to get down as fast as I could."

Santoni dived down, hitting his head the seat in front of him, leaving a knot about half the size of a pingpong ball on his forehead.

The teacher, a graduate student, was wounded but was expected to recover, the school president said. He did not give details of the injuries.

Peters said the gunman was a former graduate student in sociology at NIU, but was not currently enrolled at the 25,000-student campus about 65 miles west of Chicago.

"It appears he may have been a student somewhere else," University Police Chief Donald Grady said, adding that police had no apparent motive.

Seventeen victims were brought to Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, according to spokeswoman Theresa Komitas. One died, two were admitted and three were discharged; five are being evaluated and six others were transferred to other hospitals in critical condition. At least one male died at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, an official said.

Michael Gentile was meeting with two of his students directly beneath the lecture hall when the shootings happened. He could hear the chaos a few feet above his head.

"The shotgun blast must have been so loud," said Gentile, a 27-year-old media studies instructor. "It sounded like something was dropping down the stairs... We had no idea what this was."

Then, shorter, sharper noises he recognized as handgun shots.

"There was a pretty quick succession ... just pow, pow, pow," said Gentile, who didn't leave his office for about 90 minutes. He used a surveillance camera just outside his office to confirm that the people knocking on his door were police.

George Gaynor, a senior geography student, who was in Cole Hall when the shooting happened, told the student newspaper the Northern Star that the shooter was "a skinny white guy with a stocking cap on."

He described the scene immediately following the incident as terrifying and chaotic.

"Some girl got hit in the eye, a guy got hit in the leg," Gaynor said outside just minutes after the shooting occurred. "It was like five minutes before class ended too."

Witnesses said the young man carried a shotgun and a pistol. Student Edward Robinson told WLS that the gunman appeared to target students in one part of the lecture hall.

"It was almost like he knew who he wanted to shoot," Robinson said. "He knew who and where he wanted to be firing at."

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms sent 15 agents to the scene, according to spokesman Thomas Ahern. He said information about the weapons involved would be sent to the ATF's national database in Washington and given urgent priority. The FBI also was assisting.

All classes were canceled Thursday night and the campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents "as soon as possible" and were offered counseling at any residence hall, according to the school Web site.

The school was closed for one day during final exam week in December after campus police found threats, including racial slurs and references to shootings earlier in the year at Virginia Tech, scrawled on a bathroom wall in a dormitory. Police determined after an investigation that there was no imminent threat and the campus was reopened. Peters said he knew of no connection between that incident and Thursday's attack. Peters said he knew of no connection between that incident and Thursday's attack.

The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week.

On Feb. 8, a woman shot two fellow students to death before committing suicide at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge. In Memphis, Tenn., a 17-year-old is accused of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student Monday during a high school gym class, and the 15-year-old victim of a shooting at an Oxnard, Calif., junior high school has been declared brain dead.

*sigh, smh*

Aretha Franklin & Natalie Cole...WHO ASKED YOU?!

Aretha Franklin's Grammy Wrath Is Out Of Control
source

Aretha Franklin just received a MusicCares Award last week from the Grammys.

She deserved it. A sweetheart friend of mine pulled some strings for me to get a ticket, but I was ultimately unable to attend when a dear relative passed away days before the event.

But when I got the news that I was going to see Aretha perform, I was humbled. I've attended a MusicCares event for Natalie Cole (stay tuned for the irony) several years ago, and it was incredible. The MusicCares event is essentially a night devoted to a singular artist. So if you are a genuine fan, it is a privilege to be in attendance. I could not believe that I was going to get to see the undisputed QUEEN OF SOUL in this setting.

But now, I'm glad that I didn't go.

Today, Hip Hop Media Training launches its own awards show. It's called the WhoCares Awards, and Aretha is the first recipient.

Aretha is upset with the introduction Beyonce made for Tina Turner at the Grammys. Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as the Queen and Aretha felt disrespected, and had enough nerve to complain out loud about it via a statement issued by her publicist (news):

"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé. However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy," Aretha wrote.

Yo, Aretha, Beyonce didn't call Tina Turner the Queen Of Soul. She simply referred to her as the Queen. Ugh, didn't you see the movie "What's Love Got To Do With It?" How about the book? Did you see how great Tina Turner looked on stage at the Grammys, next to Beyonce, who is 42 years younger? Did you see her moves? I know you're a woman, but did you check out her body? Did you see the kind of shape she's in even though she eats off of the Senior Citizen menu at Dennys? Do you know that she will be 70 years old next year? Did you hear how great she sounded? Do you remember how she found the strength to turn everything around after years of abuse from Ike Turner? Didn't you know that she was penniless, but went on to become one of the most successful women in entertainment? Don't you know that Anna Mae Bullock is from Nutbush, Tennesse? Nut-bush! (Do you even know where that is?) You don't remember how she helped revolutionize rock 'n roll, not to mention soul?

What is wrong with you?

You don't think she deserves to be considered a queen?

Not even on the night she is being honored?

Come on now, Aretha. Don't be greedy. Show Tina some R-E-S-P-E-C-T?

If you want to be upset at someone for handing out titles that you think are inappropriate, where were you on the night of June 19, 2001 when your god daughter Whitney Houston referred to her ex-husband Bobby Brown as the King Of R&B at the 1st Annual BET Awards?

We needed you to issue a statement then. That would have been perfect. It would have been fitting for the Queen Of Soul to announce, "Here ye, here ye! Bobby Brown is not the King Of R&B."

But you left us hanging.

Thankfully, Jamie Foxx told us that Whitney apparently meant that Bobby was the King of "Reefer & Beer."

And just because I'm all pumped up, I think I should also toss a couple words in Natalie Cole's direction.

Man. Aretha and Natalie are two of my favorites. I'm telling you. I love some Natalie Cole. Baby Girl, you are underrated. You have some of my favorite songs?

But why are you hating on Amy Winehouse? (news)

Why?

What did she do to you?

Why do you think the Grammys were wrong for giving her those awards?

Because she's on drugs?

Is that it?

Natalie, we are not talking about Britney Spears here.

I don't care that Sharon Jones And The Dap Kings are getting shaft and not receiving the credit they deserve for being Amy's backing band. I love them too. But don't try to act like you don't like "Rehab."

Don't try to act like you weren't surprised when you found out that "Rehab" was some blue-eyed soul?

Let the moral courts judge Amy. But the Grammys is supposed to recognize the most outstanding recorded works in the related categories. If you are implying that Amy's work is not worth recognition, you are wrong. How about you go back to the height of your own drug issues and return all the awards you received during that time? How would you feel if your honors were erased from the history books?

We are all proud that you were able to overcome your own bought with drugs. You're looking good Natalie. Try to meet with Amy. Talk to her. Tell her your story. Maybe you can help her.

Just don't do her dirty like Dr. Phil did Britney.

Don't be a hater.

And that's the message for the day. It's for both you and Aretha.

Stop the hateration.

You are legends and you're setting a bad example source

Macy doesn't consider herself a junkie

***
I agree 100% with the author Billy Johnson, Jr.
These ladies have too much time on their hands to worry about someone else, who's not THINKING ABOUT THEM.
Who does Aretha think she is? You have platinum sales, plaques, awards, etc and you're trippin' cuz T.T. was called Queen?
Is this a joke?
And what makes this ghetto soap opera a trip is that you, Ms. Franklin, behaved in a manner UNBECOMING A QUEEN!
You aired your pettiness out in the open...and your argument is invalid.
That wasn't YOUR NIGHT.
That was about Tina Turner...GET OVER YOURSELF.
What's that song you made with Fantasia...'Put u up on Game"
Let me Put You Up on (some ) Game...
DON'T NOBODY OWE YOU ANYTHING!
Tina Turner is older than you...shouldn't you respect your elders, MS, R-E-S-P-E-C-T??
Or is respect simply one way when you're involved.
You wanna trip out cuz Tina was called Queen...smh...
WHO ASKED YOU?!

And to Natalie Cole:
How can a skillet call the pot, black?!
Did you forget where you came from?
You had the same fight with addiction as Amy Winehouse.
Didn't you receive accolades, applause etc when YOU were strong out in the NOT SO DISTANT PAST??
You say bad behavior shouldn't be rewarded, but I don't see you spouting that in reference to Lil' Wayne, R. Kelly, Foxy Brown, Naomi Campbell...they're infamous with drugs, PEDOPHILIA, violence...but I haven't heard speak on that.
Now this girl is in recovery. A recovering addict such as yourself, should know what kind of detriment words such as yours could do to a person in a delicate state.
Remember when YOU AND YOUR MAMA was in the news when YOU were strung out.
Let's not act brand new.
I'm curious as to the timing...you didn't speak about Amy before the Grammys, but you're vocal now.
After she won 5 Grammys.
Seems like you're hatin' to me.
She was as shocked as everyone else to win.
But did Amy give herself those Grammys? Or was it the same panel who GAVE U YOURS?
That child is sick...and I'm so glad I'm not reading about her doing crazy crap in the news anymore. I wish her well in her recovery.
You and Aretha's behavior post-Grammys are embarrassing.
And it's shocking cuz lawd KNOWS you two are old enough to know better.
Your genre's supposed to be the one that has class.
I can't tell.

What I don't get is...you performed with Macy Gray and her drug use was no secret...shoot she alluded to it in her interviews, and how many awards did she win under the influence?? Macy's talented too-I think her 1st cd was the best. But she didn't see anything wrong with partaking. You not only performed on a song...but u popped at her shows- what's up with that?!

Either you're prejudiced (which I doubt) or you're hatin' on her sweepin those Grammys. You should've offered her words of encouragement in her recovery. You know what it's like to have detractors-and now you're one. smh
And just so you know I am a fan of yours, I saw you this summer in Detroit w/Jeffrey Osborne ok, and you looked stunning.

You want to offer commentary on that girl winning Grammys...but keepin' it real...
WHO ASKED YOU?!

I Cannot Imagine What This Feels Like...

Introducing, Robert & Keisha...to date I have yet to view, or hear of a marriage proposal as original as Robert's. Their proposal has received over ONE HUNDRED MILLION HITS ONLINE!

:::::::HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!::::::::

Robert & Keisha's story as told by renown photographer,

At the end of April (2007) I had the privilege to shoot the engagement of Robert Gray, Jr. and Keisha Williams.

Robert and Keisha met four years ago at a surprise birthday party for a mutual friend. Two months later Keisha received anonymous flowers with a subtle message attached. It was an additional month before Robert revealed himself as her secret admirer. Robert is a native of Atlanta and Keisha hails from LaGrange,
GA.

This past February Robert contacted me to talk about his engagement plans. We met at a Starbucks in Southwest
Atlanta. The meeting lasted nearly an hour because Robert was so excited to tell me all about what he had been planning for a year. The surprise engagement was to take place at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead, Georgia. He even had a name for the the proposal ‘Remember the Ritz’ and an email address!!

Robert had arranged for 10 rooms (on different floors) at the hotel to be reserved. The rooms were to be filled with family and friends reading scriptures, roses that had been laced with gold, and unlimited candles!

On the day of the engagement, I started shooting at 4 PM and ended at 12 AM (8 hours!). There is so much more to explain but I wouldn’t do much justice. My suggestion - pop a bag of popcorn, pull out a box of tissues, and find a comfortable seat. This will be the most elaborate proposal you have ever seen.
This commentary was viewed at Brideorama.

The lengths Robert went to:
To save money for a proposal that required ten hotel rooms, 400 roses flown in from South Africa, dozens of candles and a personal photographer, Gray rented out his home for a year and moved in with his sister. When asked why he went to such lengths to propose, Robert said, "It was truly a vision from God." Essence.com

It's not over...watch Robert's sacrificing and meticulous planning come together, as they Remember the Ritz

Song featured is "How Deeply I Need You" by Shekinah Glory.

What's happened since the proposal? Find out at Since The Proposal
