Christian Brando dies at L.A. hospital

LOS ANGELES - Christian Brando, the troubled eldest son of the late famed actor Marlon Brando, has died from pneumonia at a Los Angeles hospital, an attorney said Saturday. He was 49.


Brando died Saturday morning at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, said David Seeley, an attorney representing Marlon Brando's estate.

Seeley said Brando was taken to the hospital on Jan. 11. There are no funeral plans yet scheduled, he added.

"This is a sad and difficult time for the family," Seeley said.

Born May 11, 1958, the younger Brando had small roles in a handful of movies, including 1968's "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas!" but he was better known for his brushes with the law.

He spent five years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in 1990 for killing his sister's boyfriend, Dag Drollet, at the Brando family's estate.

Brando said he accidentally shot Drollet as they struggled for a gun during an argument over whether Drollet, 26, had beaten Brando's pregnant half-sister, Cheyenne.

Cheyenne, who later gave birth to Drollet's son, committed suicide in 1995 after losing custody. She was 25.

Brando's ex-wife, Deborah Brando, sued him for domestic violence in 2005. She claimed that shortly after their 2004 marriage, Brando repeatedly beat her and threatened to kill her in the presence of her teenage daughter.

Brando countersued, alleging that his ex-wife broke into his home and beat him because he wanted to annul their marriage only 10 weeks after exchanging vows.

The lawsuits were settled last year on undisclosed terms.

Brando was charged Jan. 10, 2005, with two counts of spousal abuse and he pleaded guilty. He was placed on three years' probation and ordered to drug and alcohol rehabilitation as well as a spousal-abuse prevention program.

Brando also was the one-time lover of Bonnie Lee Bakley, who was shot to death in 2001. At one time, Bakley claimed Brando had fathered her child but tests showed it belonged to actor Robert Blake, whom she later married.

Blake was tried for her murder and acquitted but later ordered to pay $30 million in a wrongful death lawsuit. During that civil case, Blake's lawyer suggested Brando was the killer.

Brando, who had denied any involvement, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination on the stand during the trial.

Seeley said Brando was not married at the time of his death and did not leave any children

Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon a blog that is dedicated to missing/found/or recovered black people who's garnered little or no media attention.

Not only is keeping up this type of blog an arduous one, but it can be frustrating, as well as rewarding. Check out an interview with Deidra: Deidra Speaks. I too remember the case of Stepha Henry and the planned interview surrounding her disappearance. I also remember MSNBC decided Paris Hilton going to jail took precedent over a black woman who was missing.
Ratings wouldn't be high enough.

Missing: Latisha Rutledge and family

Family members said a pregnant mother from Detroit and her two small children ages 4 and 2 have not been seen in nearly two weeks. They were supposed to board a Greyhound bus in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. headed to Downtown Detroit, but no one has seen them since they were spotted at the bus station.

Latisha Rutledge, 22, is eight and a half months pregnant, and her baby is due any day.

Family members said she may have already given birth.

Rutledge had been living with her uncle in Florida for the last couple months trying to start over, but things didn't work out.

Her uncle dropped Rutledge and her children off at the bus station Jan. 11, and they were supposed to arrive in Detroit Jan. 13.

Rutledge's mother is frightened and frustrated, and said her daughter has no money.

Greyhound does not require photo identification at all its terminals so there is no way to know if Rutledge even boarded the bus.

Greyhound said it can not release passenger information unless law enforcement request it.

Rutledge's mother Marsella Satchel said she has not been able to file a missing persons police report yet, because police told her she must contact every hospital in Fort Lauderdale and Detroit before it can be filed. Deidra's Blog

Introducing Billy Blanks, Jr...

U never know what you'll stumble across when you're blog surfing. Having said that, I was chillin' at one of my lil blog bros blog and learned, Billy Blanks' (of Tae Bo fame) son-Billy Blanks Jr (BBJ)- has an infomercial out. Who knew? I didn't know, cuz I don't watch TV. Well BBJ, is a browner version of his sister and his dvd looks easier and more engaging.

His dad's dvds almost resulted in my death. smh- But yet I made it through that fire!! His dvds work...but good googly moogly...I just started sweating thinking about Papa Blanks' dvds.

Anyhoo...check out baby Blanks' infomercial...there's a lot of dancing and singing (i can get with that)...but it does have a little cheese factor to it. His wife, actress Sharon Catherine (Brown) Blanks is an actress/singer who I remember from an episode of Good Times: Sharon appear'd on an episode entitled "Breaker, Breaker" where she and 'Michael' communicated with each other via CB radios and when they met in person, Michael was surprised to learn she was in a wheelchair. She STILL looks the same, eventhough she was 15 when she appeared on Good Times. For more info check out Sharon's bio

One thing I've noticed during my Tae Bo years-his daughter Shellie was always on the scene...but BJ wasn't. Shoot-you couldn't even find a pic of BBJ anywhere online until recently. Ok-but I digress. DETROIT -- Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick telephoned Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Tuesday morning -- the day before the story of his scandalous text messages hit the newsstands -- to tell Worthy he would remain neutral in the 2008 prosecutor's race, a spokeswoman for Worthy confirmed Friday.

Kilpatrick's intention to stay neutral in the prosecutor's race is significant because Worthy and Kilpatrick had clashed early in her four-year term after judges chose Worthy in January 2004 over Virgil Smith, who was backed by outgoing prosecutor Mike Duggan and much of the Democratic establishment.

The timing of Kilpatrick's phone call is also significant, since it would be up to Worthy to decide whether the contents of the text messages demonstrate that Kilpatrick and Beatty should face perjury charges in connection with their testimonies last year in a civil suit brought by two former Detroit police officers.

"She was very surprised to hear from him," Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for Worthy said. "He rarely calls."

Worthy has only received about three phone calls from Kilpatrick in the last four years, Miller said.

Miller would not say whether Worthy viewed the call from Kilpatrick as an attempt to curry favor with her.

Worthy announced Friday her office would investigate possible charges against Kilpatrick and Beatty.

Detroit lawyer Portia Roberson, a former assistant county prosecutor, this month announced plans to challenge Worthy in the August primary. She could not be reached for comment Friday.

Why Are Non-Black Missing People, More Important Than Black Missing People??

My daughter and I were curious about an update on Chioma Gray's disappearance, so I went to Deidra's blog Black and Missing and what do you know? Her post yesterday, 01.24.08, was about Chioma Gray. Sadly, the update is...

Where's the news on Chioma Gray?

Have you heard of her? I don’t blame you. The news stations in California apparently never heard of her either because I don’t see one, not one article on this missing young lady and she has been missing for over a month.

For those of you who don’t know, Chioma Gray is a 15 year old black female who went missing from Ventura, California on December 13, 2007. She was abducted by Andrew Tafoya. He was issued a felony warrant for kidnapping the next day.

And guess what? Not only is there no news on Chioma, but the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website messed up her poster several times. The first time, they released an updated poster on Chioma without a picture of her abductor. They also misspelled the city she went missing from.(The city was spelled “Vetura” instead of “Ventura”)

Here’s the evidence

Then on Tuesday (Jan 22), they updated the poster again. They added the abductor picture back but changed his relationship to her. He is now a companion instead of abductor even though the poster states that there’s still a felony warrant out for his arrest. And they still didn’t spell the city name right! Yup, confusing I know.

So what’s really going on here? No news on Chioma, no Amber Alert issued and now her kidnapper is her friend?!

Their (the runaways) parents traveled throughout the day Tuesday, an "Inside Edition" camera crew in tow. The program paid for the parents' flights, hotel rooms and a limousine to take them to the airport Tuesday morning, said Veronica McConnell, 27, Hannah's sister.

"Inside Edition," Wismer said, told the families not to talk to other media outlets. Officials at the show did not return calls to the Free Press about such an arrangement.

On Wednesday, the family of 10-month-old Da'Niyah Marie Jackson of Troy Hill will face her accused killer in court. But Monday they were concentrating on making funeral arrangements for the doe-eyed girl who police said was beaten and sexually assaulted by her mother's live-in boyfriend. "She wasn't one of those babies that was really loud or cried all the time," said Clarence Jackson, the baby's grandfather. "She was quiet. She just kind of looked around with those big eyes and took it all in. You couldn't have asked for a better baby."
The infant died Saturday at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh from abdominal injuries that led to the failure of part of her small intestine known as the jejunum, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.

The Police yesterday filed a homicide charge against Clinton Smith, 30, who was jailed on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, rape and endangering a child. His preliminary hearing is slated for Wednesday in Municipal Court. The baby's mother, LaToya Jackson, left the child with Smith to go to her job as a waitress at a North Side restaurant, police said.
She told police she returned to find her child bruised and unresponsive. Jackson called 911 when the baby went into cardiac arrest and began having seizures. Smith told detectives he and his toddler son were the only ones home with Da'Niyah all day. The family hasn't finalized funeral arrangements for Da'Niyah, but has arranged a memorial fund to help defray the cost. Donations to the Da'Niyah Marie Jackson Memorial Fund can be made at any PNC bank branch. LaToya Jackson declined to comment yesterday. "We're just in shock," said Clarence Jackson Jr., Da'Niyah's uncle. "We had to set up a fund because we didn't have insurance on the baby, because who thinks to take out insurance on an infant?
"We just can't believe this. We can't believe it happened. She was a sweet baby."source

I opened this up this morning and I am PISSED!!!!!

This is another example of what can happen when you trust strange men with your kids!! Please Everybody!! If you meet someone and call yourself falling in love all fast, that's fine and good BUT, leave the babies out of it. This day and age there are so many sick and twisted people on the inside and picture perfect on the surface. You do not know what lies in the minds of people in this day and age, I don't care how sweet they treat you and yours. We are living in a world where people do not fear God an d a s a result- there is no limit to the sick acts people do. Especially with our children. We (as mothers) have to protect our little ones!!! Even if it means giving up a personal life for a while. Put the babies first!

I don't mean to preach to anyone but I am sending this out to my entire email list so that it can affect the right persons at the right time. I googled this story and it is very true...sick, sad and true.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick used city funds to cover some personal travel expenses as he rendezvoused with Chief of Staff Christine Beatty across the country.

DETROIT (AP) - A newspaper report shows Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and an aide used taxpayers' funds at times for personal expenses as they traveled together across the country.

The story published in today's Detroit Free Press comes after a prosecutor last week launched an investigation into allegations that Kilpatrick and Chief of Staff Christine Beatty lied under oath about an affair.

The paper found Kilpatrick and Beatty planned a trip to Denver. His official appointment calendar described it as "Gone Fishing!!!"

Text messages show they also discussed romantic getaways to Houston, West Virginia and "the islands."

The newspaper reported Thursday it had examined about 14,000 text messages on Beatty's city-issued pager indicating they had been intimate.

Who was the mystery woman connected with the Couple’s Retreat package the mayor enjoyed with a woman who, according to other records we have obtained exclusively, identified herself as Carmen Slowski?

We’ve searched and found no evidence of any woman in Michigan or North Carolina with that name.

This documentation we’ve obtained documentation that shows the mayor and the mystery woman enjoyed an hour-long massage together in the same room before relaxing in a two-person aromatic whirlpool bath together.

Included in the $504 package: chocolate covered strawberries and champagne to wash it down. A few hours earlier, the mayor was alone for a deep tissue massage billed at $264.

(STEVE) We have been in touch with the mayor’s spokesman this afternoon, asking about this trip last weekend. James Canning, the acting press secretary, claimed he knew nothing about any such trip, then hung up on me and never called back.

It was Canning who told reporters last night that the mayor was returning from Florida where we caught him hiding at a home he quietly bought in Tallahassee last summer…but there’s no evidence his spokesmen were truthful when they said he was returning last night.

He was not seen at the airport—and hasn’t been seen all day.

The Wayne County prosecutor says she has opened an investigation following a newspaper report that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his top aide exchanged sexually explicit text-messages.


DETROIT (AP) - The Wayne County prosecutor says she has opened an investigation following a newspaper report that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his top aide exchanged sexually explicit text-messages.

The messages appear to contradict the pair's denials in court that they had romantic ties.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy didn't elaborate on the specifics of her investigation, but says she was unaware of the text messages until she read a report in the Detroit Free Press yesterday.

The text messages raise the question of whether the mayor and Chief of Staff Christine Beatty committed perjury during a whistle-blower trial last summer.

A conviction of lying under oath can bring up to 15 years' imprisonment.

A spokesman for Kilpatrick has said Kilpatrick and his family "plan to continue their private time for the next several days."

Beatty hasn't commented since the story ran.

"Yesterday there was an article that appeared in the Detroit Free Press about the mayor and his chief of staff. I found out about this article when you did, in the morning newspaper.

"There are people who mistakenly believe that this office has been conducting an investigation. That could not be further from the truth and we have received no information whatsover from any police agency.

"News reports and articles are not investigations and they are not evidence. We cannot and will not make any potential charging decision based on that.

"However, here is the decision that I have made. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will conduct an independent investigation that will be fair, impartial, and thorough. We will not be rushed by anyone or anything.

"We will only be influenced by the evidence and the facts that develop -- and nothing, I mean nothing else. Thank you for coming."

Winehouse Says Yes to Rehab

Singer Amy Winehouse has checked herself into rehab in a bid to kick her drug addictions.

The move follows a meeting on Thursday with her record label Universal, her management, family members and doctors.

It follows photographs published in the U.K. earlier this week apparently showing the troubled star smoking crack cocaine.

A statement from Universal reveals Winehouse's rehab stint -- at an undisclosed location -- is a bid to help her kick her drug dependence in time to appear at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 10. Winehouse is nominated for six awards.

The statement reads, "Amy Winehouse's planned appearance at the NRJ Awards in France on Saturday has been canceled as the artist has entered a rehabilitation clinic.

"Amy decided to enter the facility today after talks with her record label, management, family and doctors. She has come to understand that she requires specialist treatment to continue her ongoing recovery from drug addiction and prepare for her planned appearance at the Grammy Awards.

"Amy entered the facility by mutual agreement and continues to receive the full support of all concerned.

"Amy is the most talented and important musical artist of her generation and has made huge strides on her road to recovery. Universal Music Group wants nothing more than to see her take the time she needs to come back to full health and fulfill her incredible potential with the label.

"All concerned feel that Amy must put her health before all other considerations and will be by her side whenever and wherever they are needed." source

I know this chile didn't want to go to Rehab (no, no, no), but I hope something "clicks" while she's in there. I don't want to seem like the grim reaper, but if she's only going to rehab, in light of the recent release of her smoking "crack" on video (see below) then she is sure to relapse when she's released. Also, she's depressed at the incarceration of her husband. I hope she's in the right rehab facility-but she's schedule to perform at the Grammy's-which I think those idiots at the Grammy's did (schedule Amy Winehouse to appear) to insure people will tune in. The Grammy's have sucked consistently for years-and they're choosing to exploit Amy,just as MTV (who's rating were low for the past several years) did (cruelly) with Britney Spears. That drug induced chile had NO BIZNESS on stage trying to perform. They should've thrown a collage of pics together set to Brit's music, and called it a day.

Hours after the Detroit Free Press revealed racy text messages between Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Chief of Staff Christine Beatty, the shocking story is making national news.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick exchanged romantic and sexually oriented text messages with a top aide, contradicting their denials in court that they had romantic ties, the Detroit Free Press reports.

In a story on its Web site Wednesday night, the newspaper quotes from exchanges between Kilpatrick and chief of staff Christine Beatty. Kilpatrick issued a statement Wednesday night saying the messages "reflect a very difficult period in my personal life."

Last summer, Kilpatrick and Beatty testified in a police whistleblower lawsuit and denied any sexual or romantic ties in 2002-03.

Mike Stefani, a lawyer for the officers, asked Beatty if she and Kilpatrick were "either romantically or intimately involved with each other" during the period covered by the case.

"No," she replied.

Stefani asked Kilpatrick if he was "romantically involved with Christine Beatty" in 2002-03.

"No," he replied.

At another point in his testimony, Kilpatrick expressed anger about claims of an affair between him and Beatty.

"I think it was pretty demoralizing to her — you have to know her — but it's demoralizing to me as well," the mayor said. "My mother is a congresswoman. There have always been strong women around me. My aunt is a state legislator. I think it's absurd to assert that every woman that works with a man is a whore.

"I think it's disrespectful not just to Christine Beatty but to women who do a professional job that they do every single day. And it's also disrespectful to their families as well."

But the Free Press said it examined about 14,000 text messages on Beatty's city-issued pager from two months in 2002 and two months in 2003 and found many examples of such ties.

Kilpatrick is married, and Beatty was married at the time.

"I'm madly in love with you," Kilpatrick wrote on Oct. 3, 2002.

"I hope you feel that way for a long time," Beatty replied. "In case you haven't noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!"

On Oct. 16, 2002, Kilpatrick wrote Beatty: "I've been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love."

In a statement released by his office Wednesday night, Kilpatrick said: "It is profoundly embarrassing to have these extremely private messages now displayed in such a public manner.

"My wife and I worked our way through these intensely personal issues years ago. I would now ask that the public and the media respect the privacy of my wife and children and of Christine Beatty and her children at this deeply painful moment for our families."

Wayne County prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller declined comment on the legal implications of the report. Conviction of lying under oath could bring up to 15 years' imprisonment.

When asked if the prosecutor's office would open an investigation into possible perjury, Miller said: "We have not received anything from anyone. Other than that, we have no comment."

In the civil case, a Wayne County jury awarded $6.5 million to two former police officers in the lawsuit against the city and Kilpatrick.

The jury said Kilpatrick and the city unlawfully dismissed two officers — Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope. The men claimed they suffered after looking into alleged wrongdoing within Kilpatrick's security unit.

The events happened in Kilpatrick's first four-year term. He was elected to a second term in November 2005.

The Free Press didn't explain exactly how it obtained the text messages, but said it was outside a lawsuit it filed to get all records related to the settlement the city reached with the two officers. The newspaper said it cross-referenced the text messages with the mayor's private calendar and credit card records from that period to verify events in some messages.
